Graduate Student Profile: Engineering Safer Solid Waste is a Career Goal for Bently Higgs

As more trash and waste accumulate due to population growth and increased consumption worldwide, we need to develop methods to effectively manage waste in economically resourceful and environmentally-friendly ways.

Bently Higgs, an environmental/civil engineer who recently completed his doctoral degree from Florida A&M University at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, is actively exploring ways to improve waste management and landfills. He studied under esteemed environmental engineering professor,  Tarek Abichou, Ph.D.

FAMU-FSU Engineering students win first place in 2019 Doghouse Challenge and Sight-Reading competitions at ASCE Conference

More than 60 students from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering participated in the 2019 American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)  Southeast student conference . The event was hosted by the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. During the conference, engineering students from 29 schools had the opportunity to network and compete in numerous engineering challenges.

FAMU-FSU Engineering students Daniel Diaz, Jamie Green and Parker Austin were awarded first place for their design of a sustainable dog house. “The idea behind the Dog House competition is to help an animal rescue group provide temporary housing for an animal in need after a disaster,” Diaz said. “Rescue organizations need to be able to set up a mobile area to house dogs in an emergency. The guidelines stipulated that the structure had to be sturdy, light, easy to assemble, weather resistant and made from sustainable materials.” The students submitted a technical paper, presented their work to judges and constructed a full-size version of the proposed doghouse. After months of preparation the students built a lightweight hemp composite doghouse that could be assembled in a few seconds.

Employee Spotlight: Daynah Blake
2018 Staff Excellence Award for the College of Engineering

Daynah Blake, Program Associate in the Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering, received the 2018 Staff Excellence Award for the College of Engineering.   As a program assistant, Daynah is responsible for preparing pre-admission paperwork for prospective graduate students. In nominating her for the award, interim chair Lisa Spainhour mentioned Daynah's cheerful personality that shines through in all that she does. As an example, she is working to be able to greet visitors, especially our international graduate students, with a "Hello" in their native language.  Her willingness to go "above and beyond" is why Daynah Blake won the FAMU-FSU Staff Excellence Award .

Undergraduate Student Profile: Jennifer Magi

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is pleased to recognize sophomore Jennifer Magi as the College of Engineering’s nominee for the FSU Humanitarian of the Year award. Jennifer has a history of dedicating herself to humanitarian efforts -- at the college, in the community, and in the nation. In her freshman year, she raised funds and spent many hours volunteering for the Dance Marathon at FSU. Since then, she founded the FSU chapter of the Gift of Life bone marrow registry. As Campus Ambassador, Jennifer has been involved in numerous bone marrow registry drives, helping add over 610 individuals to the international database. In addition, she has maintained a stellar academic record, participated in the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program at FSU, and is active in the ASCE-FES student chapter. In the fall, Jennifer will be ASCE Vice President for the chapter. She is the recipient of the prestigious Hollings Scholarship from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. We at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering are proud of all that Jennifer has accomplished and continues to accomplish at the college.

College Spotlight: BOG editorial praises FAMU-FSU
Marshall Criser III, Chancellor, State University System of Florida

If you walk the halls of the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering and talk to students, the excitement they have about their future careers is palpable. They are studying to design bridges and robots, develop the devices and procedures that solve medical problems, and advance the latest manufacturing technologies. With knowledge in their pockets and their lives in front of them, the possibilities are endless.

The same sense of optimism is true for the institution itself, which is the only college of engineering in the nation that belongs to two universities. Four years after FAMU and FSU agreed to come forward in a renewed spirit of cooperation, the college has soared 19 points in the national rankings, increased external funding by 30 percent, recruited 20 outstanding new faculty, expanded programs to Panama City and introduced two new engineering degree programs.
