Unprecedented Win for Maryland Arts - New Funding Stream Secured

Dear Maryland Arts Advocates,

Maryland Citizens for the Arts (MCA) would like to congratulate and appreciate the thousands of dedicated Maryland arts advocates who have made a tremendous impact!

A new administration always comes in with different priorities than its predecessor. Still, thanks to our incredible grassroots arts advocacy, we have not only secured record funding for the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) but also ensured that, for the first time in Maryland history, the arts now have a separate funding stream from the state's Capital budget. This will help fund the newly created Arts and Culture Capital Grant Program administered by MSAC!

MCA extends heartfelt appreciation to all dedicated arts advocates for your tremendous impact! Here is what we have achieved during the 2023 Legislative Session:

  • Record $30.5 million for MSAC in FY2024 budget (almost $2 million increase from FY23)
  • $3 million appropriation, the first-ever separate funding stream for arts from the state's Capital budget
  • Passage of Senate Bill 167, sponsored by arts champion Senator Sarah Elfreth, for MSAC funding formula transparency
  • Maryland is now ranked #2 in the nation for per capita investment in the arts

We celebrate our collective success and thank our elected leaders, Governor Moore, his administration, and the General Assembly members for their unwavering support and historic investment in the Maryland arts sector. Please take a moment to express gratitude for their commitment to our creative community.

Thank your Representatives!

On behalf of MCA's staff and board of trustees, I extend my deepest gratitude for your passion and dedication as artists, administrators, and advocates. Thank you all for helping make this legislative session such a remarkable success. I am excited to witness our sector's recovery and growth as we move forward from the devastating pandemic, continuing our essential work and creative investment in communities across the state.

Remember that MCA depends on the support of its grassroots advocates. Please consider contributing any amount to help us continue our advocacy work, ensuring that Maryland has a strong and well-funded arts sector. Together, we can make a lasting impact on our state's cultural landscape.

With warmest regards and immense gratitude,
