Candy Sales Help Wildlife!
If you have purchased a candy bar from the Town Clerk's office over the past 18 years, the turtles, owls, squirrels, and other local wildlife at The Center for Wildlife and the dogs, cats, and other animals at the Animal Welfare Society benefited from your treat. Over the years, the clerks have donated thousands of dollars to support animals in our community.
The most recent collection equaled $630, and Brenda Layman, Town Clerk, and her family spent the day at the Center for Wildlife while they dropped of the donation. Thanks to all of you who have bought a mid-afternoon sugar fix, your support means a lot to the organizations that care for these animals!

Finance Department Update
Jodie Sanborn, Finance Director
Fall in the Finance/Tax Collection Office brings lien filing, mortgage holder research, and tax commitment. In September, the department filed 227 tax liens at the York County of Registry of Deeds for unpaid 2021 real estate taxes. Department staff is currently researching each lien account for any possible mortgage holders as part of the tax lien process. Once the recorded liens are returned staff will be sending copies of the liens to mortgage holders of record. The creating and collection of the 2022 Real Estate and Personal Property tax bills will be the next big project for the Department.

Parks and Recreation Update
Tina LeBlanc, Director
The Wells Parks & Recreation Department wrapped up a great summer season and are now into our Fall season of programs. The parking lot project is in it’s final stage of completion with minor details to take care of and we are now in motion to prepare our budget for future enhancements to the Recreation Department. The Recreation Commission is working on a plan to replace and beautify the playground at the Walter Marsh Recreation Area along with adding a couple of playground pieces at the Activity Center.
We are excited to once again offer our Annual Haunted Hayride this year on October 23rd. We will be requiring masks during the hayride due to not being able to maintain proper social distancing on the tractor trailers. There will be pre-registrations only online for particular time slots this year. Registrations will be open starting next week! Reserve your spot!!

Assessing Department Update
Keeley Lambert, Assessor
We are in the home stretch of this year's tax commitment. Once the final field assessments are complete we will take the budget approved by the voters in June, and use the new valuation to set this coming year's tax rate. We will share the new tax rate as soon as it is set on our website, the Town's Facebook page, at a Select Board meeting, and, of course, here in this newsletter.
While the period for exemption applications has closed for the upcoming tax year, you can download applications from the State of Maine website and submit your applications any time before April 1, 2022 to have them apply for the next tax year. These tax exemptions decrease the amount of your home's value that can be taxed by the town.
