New Beginnings #59

This past weekend, approximately fifty youth and adults gathered for New Beginnings #59, a youth retreat for youth in grades 7-9 led by youth in grades 9-12. The Lead Teen for this weekend was Jackson Beckham, from St. Anne’s, Tifton. During the weekend the participants heard staff give talks on topics that directly impact them in their daily lives. These included questions most of us have, such as “Who am I” and how do I deal with changes that are happening in my life? Talks also included our relationships with Siblings and Parents, and theological topics such as God is Love, and Who is Jesus. On the final morning, staff offered reflections on The Church and Me, Prayer, and Sharing Gifts. During each of these talks the staff discussed their own lives in ways that the participants could relate to. Small group time included projects, creating skits, and lots of laughter! There was also plenty of time for games, worship, and music!

When asked to reflect on their favorite parts of the weekend, some participants discussed being nervous about their first experience at Honey Creek, but loving it once they settled in. Returning participants talked about how good it was to be back in a place and with a community in which they felt safe and accepted for who they really are. Staff discussed how great it felt to serve participants, and see them come together as small groups, and as a large group! Overall, the weekend was an amazing experience for all who were there, and we’re already looking forward to the next one, at which Garrett Grant, of the Church of Our Savior in Martinez will be the Lead Teen!

Below are a few photos from the weekend. To look at more than 400 of them, follow this link to our Flickr album!

1Book1Diocese discussion questions

The 1Book1Diocese read for Lent is a classic work, Beginning to Pray by Anthony Bloom. This simple and powerful book, gets at the vital importance of encountering God in prayer.

The 1970 book is readily available both in a new edition and in used copies. You can find the reading guide for the Diocese of Georgia here.

The guide offers questions for groups to use for the weeks following the Sundays in Lent with an optional meeting in Holy Week.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Have you reconnected with a friend after many years? How did that renewed connection come about?
  2. Read Luke 18:9-14 together. Bloom asserts that the publican or tax-collector has had moments of extending mercy that do not fit with his usual behavior. Have you felt a pull to do better, a tug to act in what is, in retrospect, a more godly way than you might?
  3. Bloom describes the stages a woman he knew went through after knowing her disease was incurable. Have you walked with a person who was dying? How did that person relate their experience of the presence of absence of God?
  4. What has been your experience of God’s absence and God’s presence?
