ALL SAINTS DAY
NOVEMBER 7

For a number of years now, we have been celebrating All Saints Day on November 1 when it falls on a Sunday, and the first Sunday after November 1 when it does not. Though still relatively new to many Baptists, it is an ancient Christian tradition that dates back at least to the fifth century. In the Eastern Church, it began in the season of Easter and eventually moved to the season after Pentecost. In the Western Church, it moved to November 1 in 835 C.E.

The celebration began as a way of recognizing certain people, but today it points to the saintly status of all Christians – not to our perfection but to our experience of being shaped by God’s grace as revealed in Christ. All Saints Day also provides space to celebrate our great hope for eternal life. Thus, we include a prayerful remembrance of the church members we have lost over the past year and locate our very real grief in the context of eternal hope.

Since the Capitol Square churches have had to cancel the annual Holiday Service of Hope and Remembrance because of COVID-19, our All Saints remembrance takes on even greater significance this year. Though we will only read the names of church members who have died since last year’s All Saints Day, we will list the names of extended family members we have lost, remember their loved ones in our prayers, and celebrate their hope in eternity too. We invite you to make a special effort to attend or to tune into this service!

CHURCH CONFERENCE TOMORROW NIGHT

Our regularly scheduled Church Conference will be held this Wednesday, October 27, at 6:15pm. The Zoom link is below, as well as a call-in number for those who would rather join via phone. We will send out the needed attachments that normally would be on the tables via email before the meeting. Please note that this is a different Zoom link than our regularly scheduled Wednesday Centerpoint link. The Finance Committee will present the proposed budget for 2022. The 2022 budget is a 4.8% increase over the 2020 budget, which was scaled down because of COVID and open staff positions. However, the 2022 budget is an overall decrease from 2019. The 2022 budget includes a 2% increase in personnel salaries, supporting two new organizations in our community, and modest increases in some church program areas. The new budget also reflects the full staffing of our church for the first time in two years. After our stewardship campaign, the Finance Committee will re-examine the proposed budget and present a final budget for approval early in 2022 at a Church Conference. Please prayerfully consider the budget and how you will support FBC financially in 2022. You may see the proposed budget in the Members-Only section of our website. We look forward to seeing as many of your faces as possible tomorrow night!

WEDNESDAY NIGHT SUPPER

Each week, dinner will continue to be from 5-6pm, tailgating style, in the parking lot. If it rains, your family may come inside the building and we'll all spread out between the Fellowship Hall, Lewis lobby, and 301/302. We have returned to requiring reservations for Wednesday night dinners; reserve your spot at this link to the page on the church website or by calling the church office. Let's all try to park along the perimeter of the parking lot, so we can leave the middle spaces for chairs/communal tailgating!

October 27 • Chicken stir-fry with rice
November 3 • Chicken, rice, black beans, and tortillas
November 10 • Meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and green beans
November 17 • Chicken Lo Mein with sauteed Asian vegetables
OCTOBER MISSION PROJECTS CROP WALK & TOY JOY

Crop Walk
Our children’s and youth ministries have both committed to supporting CROP this year. Both will be using different strategies to participate in a walk and raise funds. The children and youth have both established Facebook fundraisers. Funds raised by each group are counted toward the $3,000 goal for FBC.

Click here for the children’s fundraiser and here for the youth fundraiser. If you wish to contribute to the team as a whole, click here

Please consider sharing these fundraisers on your own Facebook page by copying and pasting the URL in a post on your page. Donations are accepted through all of the FBC electronic platforms and here. Checks should be made out to "CROP Hunger Walk/CWS" and given to our financial office and will be delivered to CROP with the checks our team “walkers” receive in support. You may register for CROP and join our team here.
Thanks for your support of CROP Hunger Walk this year.

Toy Joy
Our annual Toy Joy event will be a drive-thru pickup, like last year, rather than inviting our guests into the church to shop for gifts for their children. We plan to give each family a gift card for groceries again this year as well as toys and filled stockings. If you would like to make a donation to help with the cost, you may write a check to FBC and put Toy Joy in the memo line, and deliver it to the church financial office. There is also a link to donate electronically for this on the church website. There will be signups coming out soon to volunteer on the days we put the gift boxes together for our guests (Nov. 5 & 6) and for the weekend of the event (Nov.13 & 14). We look forward to your participation.
DEACON ELECTIONS

We have arrived at the time in FBC’s calendar to elect deacons, the spiritual leaders of the church who assist with congregational care. You have until October 31 to submit a ballot nominating up to 16 deacons (eight men and eight women). Those ballots can be submitted by printing off the form that will be provided and filling it out, or simply writing out your nominations on a piece of paper marked “Deacon Nominations 2021” and mailing it to the church at 99 N. Salisbury Street, Raleigh, NC 27603, attn: Jennie Herrick. The paper forms can also be dropped off in the ballot box that will be located in the library on the counter. In addition, nominations may be sent electronically by email to Jennie Herrick. That email should show “Deacon Nomination” in the subject line and list the nominees. Jennie will then print the form, cut off the identifying information, and place it in the deacon ballot box. At noon on Sunday, October 31, the tellers appointed by the Chair will gather in the library to count the ballots, and the Chair and Vice-Chair will then notify those selected.

Please see the attached Deacon Election ballot for a current list of deacons and
their spouses who are not eligible based on the bylaws,
as well as others who have asked not to be considered for election.

NOVEMBER 7 BABY SHOWER FOR THE REEDS

On November 7, all members of the FBC family are invited to a shower honoring Leah and Chad Reed as they anticipate the arrival of their baby boy, due the first week of December! This drive-through event will be hosted by some of Leah and Chad's many friends in the congregation. Hope to see you there!

DONATING TO THE WELCOME HOUSE

With the recent crisis in Afghanistan, many of you have reached out about donating items to the Welcome House and inquiring about more ways that you might be involved in helping these neighbors. All household donations can be taken directly to The Green Chair Project, both furniture and smaller items; please note the items are for Welcome House Raleigh when you drop them off. You can find a list on the Welcome House website under the “donate” tab of items needed to set up an apartment for a refugee family. They have also included a page of resources for how to help our Afghan neighbors which includes articles, podcasts, and helpful webinars. For any questions regarding donations to the Welcome House, please email Marc Wyatt.
SHOPPING FOR
TOY JOY GUESTS

The first volunteer opportunities for Toy Joy will be Friday, November 5, and Saturday, November 6. This is the weekend before the actual event (November 13 and 14), and we will be filling the requests for toys that have come into our online store and packing them for pickup by our guests. We will have two shifts each day: 9am-12pm and 1-4pm. For the safety of all our volunteers, masks will be required and we ask that you only volunteer if you have been fully vaccinated. Please use this link to sign-up, and email Anne Cooke with any questions.

We appreciate the outpouring of generosity we've received for donations in September and October, and for those of you who have shipped new items directly to the church! While our donation drop-offs have concluded for the year, there's still time to ship new donations directly to the church. Our wish lists for Amazon and Walmart are linked below. Thank you for your continued support of this ministry!
