2020 Is Coming to an End -- Thank Goodness!
It's the end of the year -- thank goodness on some parts. Other moments consisted of boredom, saving on gas, perhaps bingeing (yes, I looked up that spelling) on shows, etc.
Being quilters I sincerely hope at least one UFO (unfinished object) or PIG (project in grocery bag) was finished . . . at least before a new one was begun.
This year has set us up to continue with an alternate way of gathering in the next year. There are in-person get-togethers, Facebook get-togethers and now we have added internet get-togethers. QACDG will continue! QACDG will do what's necessary when possible to keep a community of "preserving the heritage of quilting and related arts for individuals of North Central Florida through inspiration, information and education."

Preparing for 2021
Are you already sewing for next year? Watch for an email from Gail asking if you need batting. We will meet in Gennette’s driveway on Dec. 17, and members can pick up pre-ordered batting, choose fabric and get quilt labels. If you need fabric or batting but cannot meet at Gennette’s in person, contact Gail Benz, Gennette Gailey, Anna Rasmussen or Carol Wilkerson. We will find a way to get supplies to you!
Hello, Goodbye, and Thanks!
The Community Service beekeepers would like to thank Gennette Gailey for the million things she has done for our bee. At the end of this year, she will step away from beekeeper duties. In January, Dianna Lawrence will team up with Gail Benz, Anna Rasmussen and Carol Wilkerson as beekeepers for 2021. Please join us in thanking Gennette and welcoming Dianna.

About Our Monthly Meetings
Monthly guild meetings are scheduled 9:30 am - noon
9:30 am - 10 am Social Hour. You can see other members, chat with each other and check your volume settings.
10 am - noon General Meeting, including business meeting, program (usually 60 minutes), member show and tell (Members will be muted so there are no distracting background noises)
After the meeting -- Stay and chat some more or ask a question!

EMILY SCHAEFER'S DEATH ENDS A SAD YEAR |
|
The guild's beloved "Queen of Scraps" -- Emily Schaefer -- passed away in November, bringing a very sad and challenging 2020 to a close. This year, we lost a large number of members, as well as spouses of members.
During our December meeting, we will take a moment to mourn Emily and all the members we've lost this year, remember the joy they've brought us, and celebrate their lives.
In our January newsletter, we will include memories of Emily and of all our quilters who have passed on this year. If you have a short memory, story or thought about our late members, please send them on to share with the group.

The lucky winner of our 2020 raffle quilt will be drawn during our December meeting. If you would like to buy or sell tickets -- time is running out. It's only $1 pert ticket or $5 for 6 tickets.
If you want tickets to sell, I can arrange to mail or drop off tickets, or you can pick them up at my house. Also, some people are just sending me a check for the number of tickets they want, and I fill them out, and take a picture of the tickets to send to them before putting the tickets in the jar.

What stories are there to tell? We are starting with our founding members from 2003. Today we feature JOAN NEW.

Q: Why did you join the guild?
A:To make friends while I enjoyed quilting.
Q: How was the guild different when you joined than it is today?
A: August, 2003 was the first meeting, and therefore we were just organizing.
Q: How would you describe the guild or its members to others?
A: Wonderful. Good friends. Fun.
Q:Tell us a story in the guild’s past.
A: When the Day Guild held its first meeting in August, 2003, I was ready. I had belonged to a small quilting group during the 1990s. I had made a number of large patchwork quilts and appliqué quilts. I was ready to move forward. I had begun taking a quilting magazine and discovered crazy quilting and had ordered Judith Baker Montano’s Handbook of Crazy Quilting.
In 2004, Jodi Colvard started a crazy bee and I was ready. I even knew what my first project would be. I had decided that big quilts were not my thing and so I focused on doll bed quilts. My first crazy quilt was a crazy doll bed spread.
Shortly after the formation of the crazy bee, I became its leader. My interest in making small pieces led to the formation of the miniature quilt bee in 2007, which I also led. The guild provided me with a path of exploration, so that I found self-expression beyond patchwork and appliqué into the realm of art. At present, I feel I have barely begun to explore the world of art quilts.
I must also include that working beside friends, kindred spirits, has been satisfying and rewarding. The guild has also allowed me to branch out and show my work, not just at show-and-tell but wider. It gave me the courage to enter quilt shows, experience the thrill of getting a ribbon and the disappointment of not getting one. Therefore, I will say that the guild has opened up for me an opportunity for self-growth and a foot inside the art world, which is infinite.
What would you like current members to know about the guild? As we move into different and modern and new ways of quilting, don’t forget where quilting has come from. Don’t forget our mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers and all the work they did. Don’t forget the traditional patterns that connected friends, families and kept the whole family warm.

A SADDLE UP YOUR SEWING MACHINE
AND STITCH UP A HERD FOR HUGS!

Patty Marchionno is inviting guild members to head over to the stitchen' post and join her in creating a corralful of stuffed ponies, which will be donated to children in foster care and seniors in care centers.
This volunteer initiative is spearheaded by Lorraine Turner, who will be providing the pony pattern and directions. Quilters are asked to send a photo of their horses to Lorraine, where they will be posted on her website. Volunteers will then receive an address for a recipient agency that will distribute the huggable ponies to clients in need of cheer. Sewing Machine for Sale
I have a little-used Janome/New Home sewing machine for sale. Price: $200. It comes with the Instructions manual and a carrying case.
This is a basic, mechanical machine, it is not computerized. This durable machine has all metal parts. It offers 'Utility Stitches" such as overcasting, sewing buttons, buttonhole stitching, blind hem stitch, etc. and "Decorative Stitches," such as the satin stitch, fagoting stitch, smocking, etc.
Please call: Iona Malanchuk at 332-9956 for an appointment. Due to the Covid virus and a husband whose health cannot be jeopardized after having had two major operations, you may try out this machine for a few minutes on my front porch, where I will set it up for you before purchasing. Please wear a mask and gloves.
Janome is a Japanese Company that bought out the American New Home Sewing Company. I am not available to teach anyone how to use a machine or how to sew so please come only if you are familiar with sewing machines.
