Professor Chuck Marsh has been invited to deliver a Spring 2021 presentation on interdisciplinary research in the Sydney Lecture Series, which “serves the interests of Australian doctoral and graduate students in public relations and communication.”

Matt Tidwell, assistant dean for graduate and professional studies, was a featured guest on "The Crisis Ahead" podcast discussing his research into the Volkswagen "Dieselgate" crisis.

Lisa McLendon’s article “Why ablaut reduplication is tip-top” was published in the Summer 2020 issue of Tracking Changes, the quarterly newsletter of ACES: The Society for Editing.

Teri Finneman is a featured speaker at Eisenhower Library event
Associate Professor Teri Finneman is one of the featured speakers in an online suffrage discussion, "19 & '52: Ike, Women, and Equality," sponsored by the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum and Eisenhower Foundation on Sept. 15. Sign up on Facebook. Finneman also will be featured in Ellen Goodman and Lynn Sherr's "She Votes" podcast this week about the 19th Amendment and women fighting for the right to vote.

Learn more about joining the KU Ad Club
The KU Ad Club plans to meet virtually in early September. If you would like to join the club, be a member of the leadership team or learn more about the organization, email Steve Rottinghaus, Ad Club adviser, at steve_rottinghaus@ku.edu.
Students can schedule an academic advising appointment with Dan McCarthy, Eddie Muñoz or Frances Lyons via Jayhawk GPS. Advisors are meeting with students over Zoom or the phone. Drop-in appointments also will be virtual and available Mondays from 1 to 5 p.m. and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. To get the Zoom link, email jadvising@ku.edu. Career and Outreach Coordinator Steve Rottinghaus will be available virtually from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday by emailing steve_rottinghaus@ku.edu. Appointments will be conducted via email, phone, Zoom, FaceTime or Skype. Resumes, cover letters, portfolios, mock interviews and strategy for a job and internship search will be the main focus of meetings. Students are welcome to email Steve after 5 p.m. to set up an appointment or if they need immediate attention.
Journalism Student Ambassadors needed
Journalism Student Ambassadors are a select group of student volunteers who are committed, in thought and through their actions, to the positive promotion of the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications. J-School Ambassadors serve an important role in the school’s public relations, recruitment and retention efforts.
Qualifications for applying
  • Positive and passionate attitude for the J-School and for the journalism profession
  • High level of professionalism
  • Genuine desire to meet and welcome KU alumni and prospective students
  • True interest in helping the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications remain one of the leading schools of journalism
Requirements of all applicants
  • Admission to the J-School
  • A minimum of 2.75 cumulative KU GPA and journalism GPA
  • Experience working with J-School organizations and/or campus media 
  • At least two hours of availability each week between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. and some evening hours (Hours can vary with certain school events.)
  • Must attend meetings and training sessions each semester

Student Innovation Competition
The Reynolds Journalism Institute’s 2020-21 Student Innovation Competition at the Missouri School of Journalism invites college students to participate by tackling engagement with a news organization. A student or student team will partner with a news organization to devise an engagement idea innovative to that organization. Applications detailing the team’s idea are due by Oct. 31. The chosen finalist teams will implement their idea at the partner news organization for three months before presenting the results on Feb. 26, 2021, in front of a panel of judges and the public on Zoom. First-prize winner gets $10,000. More details here.

Watch William Allen White documentary on TV next month
“William Allen White: What’s the Matter with Kansas” makes it television debut next month. The documentary, sponsored by the William Allen White Foundation and directed by Academy Award-winning KU Professor Kevin Willmott, premiered on campus in 2018 during the school’s celebration of the 150th birth year of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Emporia Gazette editor. The film will air first on KMOS-TV at 3 a.m. on Sept. 7, then on KTWU at 8 p.m. on Sept. 14. Viewers also may purchase a DVD at the KU Bookstore.
The William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications is honored to partner with the Emily Taylor Center for Women & Gender Equity on events and discussions exploring the issues surrounding suffrage and the 19th Amendment. Please join us for an asynchronous screening of the new documentary film "Without A Whisper – Konnon:kwe" between Aug. 31 and Sept. 4. "Without A Whisper – Konnon:kwe" is the untold story of the ways Indigenous women influenced the early U.S. suffragists in their fight for freedom and equality.
On 6:30 p.m. Sept. 3, attend a virtual Q&A with Mohawk filmmaker Katsitsionni Fox, Haudenosaunee Knowledge Guardian Louise Herne, and intersectional feminist historian Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner.

New York Times reporter to be guest on Party on the Patio
J-School students are invited to the Dole Institute of Politics' annual semester kick-off event, Party on the Patio, at 7 p.m. Sept. 2, which will be virtual. The featured speaker is New York Times political correspondent Alex Burns, who will give his perspective on being a young professional, his experience working in journalism, and his insight into the 2020 election.
