October 22, 2021
Hi folks,

NBJH students and staff will be decked out in pink today as we show our support for the fight against breast cancer. For any and all of our NBJH families that have been impacted by this terrible disease, we send you positive thoughts and support.

Next Friday will be a different sort of dressing up as students and staff are permitted to wear Halloween costumes to school. Our Student Council will be sharing specific guidelines with everyone to ensure costumes remain appropriate and students are still able to participate in classes throughout the day.

We have officially hit the quarter pole of the school year. Today is the final day of quarter 1 for students' PE and Health classes. A reminder to students who had Health during quarter 1 to bring their PE uniforms to school starting Monday. Another reminder to ALL students to bring a mask and water bottle to school each day. We are seeing an increasing number of students who are arriving at school without these items.

Shout Outs
Congratulations to Calen Anderson and Ava Paek for being selected to participate in this year's ILMEA Festival! The festival will be held on November 6th at Libertyville High School. We know you will make us proud!

Congratulations to our 7th and 8th grade girls volleyball teams for their efforts this season. They showed tremendous hard work and pride for the past couple of months and we appreciate their resilience. Thank you Coach Geib and Coach Mendelson for your mentorship throughout the season!

Congratulations to a successful season for the NBJH cross country team. The season concluded this week after the conference meet at Wood Oaks. Team honors went to our 7th grade boys who claimed the title of conference champions. Our 6th grade girls took home 2nd place in the conference (1 point away from being conference champs). There were several outstanding individual achievements as well including top five finishes from Ray Zenimoto (2nd), Olivia Pekala (3rd), Janessa Wu (4th) and Sienna Wilson (5th). Special shout outs to our two individual conference champions -- Naoto Majoros and Payton Walker! Thank you to Coach Grossman and Coach Kostal for a great season.

IAR Reports
Individual IAR reports will be mailed home early next week.

Charity of Choice
The voices have spoken...and we're proud to announce that this year's Charity of Choice is Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF). ALSF is dedicated to changing children's lives through impactful research, raising awareness and supporting families to help cure pediatric cancer. All of our Student Council-sponsored drives, donations and fundraising activities will go toward our end of year contribution to this charity.

Upcoming Dates
Conferences will be held on Monday, November 22nd (12-8pm) and Tuesday, November 23rd (8am-1pm). Conferences will be held virtually, and online registration will open on Wednesday, November 10th. More details to come in the near future.
For 8th grade parents -- mark your calendars for Tuesday, November 9th. I will be hosting a parent only meeting to discuss the high school transition process. The meeting will begin at 6:45pm in the NBJH small gym.

Enjoy the cooler weather this weekend...

District News
Building Leaders Appreciation Week Oct. 24-30
District 28 is joining the Illinois Principals Association in recognizing the important role of school building leaders during Principal Appreciation Week Oct. 24-30 and Principal Appreciation Day on Friday, Oct. 29.

This state-endorsed recognition was first approved by the Governor of Illinois in 1990 and is celebrated annually. The IPA also joins the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the
National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), and the American Federation of School Administrators (AFSA) to recognize October as National Principals Month.

Principal Appreciation Day on Friday, Oct. 29 is an opportunity for teachers, students, parents and community members to publicly recognize the work, commitment and importance of all building leaders.

District 28 salutes all of our building administrative leaders for navigating the ever-changing landscape of the pandemic while striving to keep students and teachers safe and healthy.

In expressing his deep appreciation, Superintendent Dr. Larry Hewitt said, “Scott, Ginny, Pat, Mary, Christine, Heather, Jenna, and Nora work tirelessly to collaborate, guide, lead, iron-out, protect, problem-solve, and encourage every minute of every school day so that our staff, students, and families have outstanding schools with supportive cultures. Their work is hard and exhausting, but so vital to our success!”
COVID Dashboard, Letters Monitor Cases
The district is maintaining a COVID dashboard to publish more detailed information on positive cases and student quarantines for close contact and travel. The dashboard is updated daily with newly reported positive cases of both students and staff as well as student quarantine daily averages.
The district notifies staff and parents by email when a COVID-19 positive individual was in a school during their infectious period (48 hours prior to symptom onset for a symptomatic person or 48 hours before specimen collection for an asymptomatic person through the date of last attendance).
Virtual Backpack
District 28 shares local non-profit and community partner flyers here in the District's "Virtual Backpack." Please note that District 28 is making this information available as a courtesy and to provide information about local events and programs in our community. Materials posted on this page are the responsibility of the organizations represented. You can always check the Virtual Backpack webpage as a handy reference!
Coffee Talk for Parents Oct. 26
Join other parents and caregivers for a confidential conversation at this month's CATCH Coffee Talk on Oct 26 at 1:15 p.m.

It’s an opportunity to listen, share, and find support especially with the pace of schoolwork is picking up, the weather changing, and the holidays on the horizon. All of that comes with added stress and pressure. Take time to talk about it. When we connect with one another we feel less alone, and the daily challenges seem a bit more manageable.

Register, and you’ll receive the Zoom link shortly before the event.
6th-8th grade GBN Feeder team basketball tryouts will be held for boys on Oct. 25 & 27 and for girls on Nov. 2 & Nov. 4. click for details.
