Infrastructure Ontario awards contract for $3.6B South Niagara Hospital project


Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Niagara Health announced that they have awarded a fixed price contract to EllisDon Infrastructure Healthcare (EDIH) to design, build, finance and maintain the new South Niagara Hospital project. The contract is valued at approximately $3.6 billion, which reflects the payments made during construction, the substantial completion payment and the monthly service payments before inflation adjustments.

Construction continues to add workers


The construction sector added 11,500 jobs in December, representing more than 10 per cent of the total employment gains reported in StatCan’s latest survey of employment, payrolls and hours.


Across all sectors, the number of employees receiving pay or benefits from their employer (payroll employees) increased by a half-per-cent to come in at 91,400. Since September, cumulative overall employment figures have increased by 240,600 positions.

Engineered wood is stronger, fights climate change by capturing CO2


With the world focused on addressing climate change, scientists have had to get creative when it comes to developing sustainable building materials that tackle carbon dioxide emissions. Scientists have now devised a new way of engineering wood that makes it stronger and captures carbon dioxide from the air. Carbon dioxide is recognized as a fundamental contributing factor to climate change. Limiting carbon dioxide emissions associated with the production of structural materials like steel, metal, and cement is a way of indirectly addressing climate change.

Canada launches process to qualify candidates to build High Frequency Rail project


The Government of Canada announced a major step in the procurement process for the High Frequency Rail project: the launch of the Request for Qualifications (RFQ). The purpose of the RFQ is to identify and qualify up to three top candidates who will be invited to participate in the Request for Proposals (RFP) process, anticipated to begin in summer 2023. The procurement process will help select a private developer partner to work in collaboration with VIA HFR, the newly created subsidiary of VIA Rail, to design and develop the High Frequency Rail project.

Surety Corner: FCA Surety’s 2023 construction outlook


The past few years have been some of the most eventful years for the Canadian construction industry in the past 25 years. The COVID-19 pandemic-induced shutdowns created havoc for contractors focused on non-essential construction work. It expanded health and safety challenges onsite and led to supply chain disruptions that impacted schedules, pricing and project co-ordination.


As we reached the end of 2022, the Canadian government, like many across the world, continued to grapple with inflation well above their two per cent target; resulting in successive moves by the central bank to raise interest rates.

Mississauga hosting public info session tonight about construction of Fire Station 125


The City of Mississauga is holding a public information session regarding construction of a new fire station. The meeting will be held at Meadowvale Theatre, 6315 Montevideo Rd. tonight (Feb. 23) from 6 to 8 p.m.


Designed by Hossack & Associates Architects, the project is located at Tenth Line and Aquitaine Avenue and will also include relocation of Union Park’s leash-free zone to allow for construction of the new building. Station 125 is a priority project because it will help serve a high growth area identified in the “Shaping Ninth Line” future growth plans.

Procore appoints Sarah Hodges as Chief Marketing Officer


Procore Technologies is pleased to introduce Sarah Hodges as chief marketing officer. As CMO of Procore, Hodges will be responsible for the development of the strategic marketing plan and execution of all marketing activities globally in support of Procore’s financial and strategic business objectives.


Hodges joins Procore after several leadership positions at Autodesk, including leading strategy and marketing for the construction business line and product management for the media and entertainment business line.

DEWALT and Humber College provide access to skilled trades training


Humber College announced it has received a donation from DEWALT to support students training to enter a career in the skilled trades. The gift will be used to establish the DEWALT Pathways to the Trades Scholarships.


Two scholarships will be awarded annually as well as funding for emergency bursaries in the Centre for Skilled Trades and Technology. The gift will also be used to supplement the Centre’s tool collection and will go towards providing students who demonstrate need with the tools they require for their profession once they graduate.

The City of Toronto (the "City") requires a qualified General Contractor (the "Vendor") to provide construction services for the new Etobicoke Civic Centre ("ECC") Project. The Successful Vendor shall provide complete construction services and will be solely responsible for all activities throughout the construction phase until the completion of the project including the warranty period.
