NAWIC Tucson Chapter 122

February 2023 News

Hello NAWIC Members and Friends,

We hosted the annual February Executive Breakfast at the Connie Hillman Family Foundation Urban Construction Knowledge Center (CHUCK) on February 15th. We had a good turnout with 30 in attendance. That attendance was split evenly between members and guests.

Habitat for Humanity Chief Production, Jeff Ocampo, discussed Habitat Tucson's newest Workforce Development Center focusing on solutions to two of the most pressing issues facing Arizona, the lack of affordable housing and a growing need for skilled workforce in the trades. The CHUCK will bring together local industries, educational institutions, expert volunteers, and strong financial support that will allow Habitat Tucson to offer a "hand up" to more families, lifting them out of generational poverty. We learned how CHUCK will serve as Habitat Tucson's construction hub, warehouse, and training center, complete with a tour. The CHUCK will provide job training, and intern & volunteer opportunities with real-world experience building affordable housing. The facility is a 15,000 sqft warehouse, classroom, and office space.

A special thank you to Gina Hansen who set up the tour with CHUCK. Also, Jamie Thrush for assisting in setting up the venue.

NAWIC Chapter #122 also presented the WIC of the Year award to Becky Johnson for going above and beyond for NAWIC #122. Congrats to Becky! Please remember, this award is an honor, and all members are eligible. Next year it could be you!

Please be thinking about how you would like to participate for the next Fiscal year starting in September. This year’s Nominating Committee is Kimberly Dycus, Brittney Leith, and Susan Stein-Kregar. These ladies will be reaching out to each member in March. You may nominate yourself or another member to serve on the board for 2023-2024. Elections will be held in June 2023.

In addition to serving on the board, maybe there is a committee you would like to be involved in. There are many to choose from, we all have different passions. Find yours and be a part of our mission. Here’s a sampling of the committee opportunities out there:

WIC Week Happy Hour!

Last year we had over 100 people attend our WIC Happy Hour.

The Happy Hour is not just for women in the construction industry. Everyone is invited. Invite all your co-workers. Hang the flyer in your office. Let's make this event the talk of the town!

$250 Sponsorship Opportunity - Your Company logo will be displayed at the event and on emails. If you would like to be a sponsor, please let me know or Yvette. We can email you an invoice. Email me your logo so it can be added to the sponsorship list.

Also, we are asking for raffle prizes from the chapter members. Last year we had some fantastic raffle prizes from our membership. The raffle prizes help us raise money for our chapter. I can make arrangements to pick up your raffle prize if you are unable to attend the Happy Hour.

The focus of Women in Construction (WIC) Week is to highlight women as a viable component of the construction industry. WIC Week also provides an occasion for NAWIC’s thousands of members across the country to raise awareness of the opportunities available for women in the construction industry and to emphasize the growing role of women in the industry.
