Summer Heat Safety Tips
The summer season officially kicks off later this month, but it's already been a scorching few weeks here in Lakeway. Forecasters are also expecting 100+ degree days for much of next week. As the temperatures continue to soar during these next few months, it's important to practice some simple tips depending on where you are located during the daytime hours to prevent heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses:

Job Sites:
Stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade as often as possible.

Indoors:
Check up on the elderly, sick and those without A/C.

Vehicles:
Never leave kids or pets unattended. LOOK before your LOCK.

Outdoors:
Limit strenuous outdoor activities; find shade; and stay hydrated.

Additionally, those who are 65 and older, children younger than two and people with chronic diseases could be at higher risk for heat-related illness according to the CDC. It's recommended for those individuals to stay in an air-conditioned building or home during days with extreme heat, drink more water than usual, avoid using stoves or ovens to cook as it can make the home hotter and make sure to remain in contact with a friend, family member or neighbor.

Virtual Fishing Derby
The City of Lakeway Parks & Recreation Department invites the community to participate in the next Virtual Fishing Derby taking place today through Sunday (June 3-5, 2022). The rules are simple: go fishing at an area fishing spot; take a photo of your catch (with measuring tape and a time stamp); and send your photo in for a chance at a fishing-related prize. There will be winners selected in three categories: Biggest Catch; Smallest Catch; and Most Unique Catch. This Saturday (June 4) is also Free Fishing Day, which gives Texans the option to fish on any public waterbody in the state without a fishing license, according to Texas Parks & Wildlife.
