Introducing Terrance Harris, Director of DEI
“Greetings College of Engineering! I’m Terrance Harris, the inaugural Director of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) for CoE. It’s an honor and pleasure to be part of this great college and under the leadership of Dean Walker. DEI is essential and vital to the development and sustainability of our students, faculty, and staff not only in CoE, but across our campus and community. My role is to provide consistent support, education, and acknowledgement to our college constituents while creating a sense of belonging that will cultivate an inclusive community for all and especially those from underrepresented populations. This development will not happen overnight, so I ask for your patience, insight, and support as together we will work to make this community light shine bright.”
Please reach out to Terrance at tih29@drexel.edu and meet him in person, by appointment, in University Crossings, Suite 118.

Apply to be a Dean’s Fellow 2022-2023
As a means to further develop our talented faculty within Drexel Engineering, Dean Sharon Walker is seeking applications for the Dean’s Fellowship Program for 2022-2023. The Dean’s Fellowship Program is for all faculty interested in working on relevant topics in partnership with the Associate Deans in a broad range of critical areas, including but not limited to undergraduate education, graduate studies, student recruitment, research, faculty affairs, and diversity and inclusion. Dean’s Fellows report to the Associate Dean relevant to their project, as well as to the Dean, and are invited to participate in relevant college leadership activities. The fellowship is for one academic year, beginning on September 1 annually, and Fellows receive $5,000 in their discretionary or overhead account. Faculty can self-nominate by sending the following to Caroline Schauer, PhD, Associate Dean, Research and Faculty Affairs ( cls52@drexel.edu) by June 30: a CV, a personal statement describing which strategic priority is of interest and why (two-page maximum), and a brief support letter from relevant Department Head (emailed separately).
Introducing ASEE Campus Rep Irina Ciobanescu Husanu
Irina Ciobanescu Husanu, associate clinical professor in the Department of Engineering Leadership and Society has been appointed Drexel Engineering ASEE Campus Representative. Irina would like to invite all interested faculty to participate in the 2022 ASEE conference, "Excellence Through Diversity," to be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, June 26-29, 2022. "I look forward to being the college liaison and to engage more with the different ASEE divisions. In the months to come, I look to connect with faculty members in various divisions to plan for new academic year events." Irina has held several leadership positions with ASEE and currently serves as both Division Chair and Diversity Committee Delegate for the ASEE Manufacturing Division.
Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad Fellowship Program
The Office of Global Engagement is seeking faculty applicants who are interested in applying for the Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad Fellowship Program. The Fulbright-Hays FRA Program provides fellowships through institutions of higher education (IHEs) to faculty members who propose to conduct research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies to improve their skill in languages and their knowledge of the culture of the people of these countries. Projects should seek to advance scholarly research in the applicant's area of research as well as their language acquisition. To be eligible for the FRA, applicants must meet the absolute priority - a research project that focuses on one or more of the following geographic areas: Africa, East Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, South Asia, the Near East, Central and Eastern Europe and Eurasia, and the Western Hemisphere (excluding the United States and its territories). For full information on the program, see the message in Teams.

Congratulations
James Tangorra, PhD, professor of mechanical engineering and mechanics and department head of engineering leadership and society, received an award from the Office of Naval Research for his project, “Biologically Derived Approaches and Prototypes for the Control and Propulsion of Swimming Vehicles for Riverine Environments.” The overarching objectives of this research program are to understand the sensorimotor and mechanical processes associated with maneuvering and active stabilization in swimming fish, and to engineer fieldable vehicle prototypes and biomimetic actuators that demonstrate swimming and maneuvering in riverine environments. The specific aims of this research project are: 1) to understand the neural and mechanical processes associated with the control of maneuvering and stabilization in swimming fish; 2) to develop fieldable, biorobotic prototypes that adopt these biological principles for operating in riverine environments; and 3) to advance the engineering of biomimetic actuators for use in fin modules that propel and control swimming vehicles.
Anup Das, PhD, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, received an award from the Miami VA Healthcare System for “Effect of Cyclical Intermittent Hypoxia on Lung Cancer Progression.” Miami VA Healthcare System’s mission is “to serve the veteran who served us” by providing patients and veterans with the highest quality of care in a safe environment. This project is part of the US Department of Veterans Affairs Biomedical Laboratory Research & Development (BLRD) Merit Review Grant, and the team will work on detection and discovery of biomarkers for lung cancer progression and metastases in mice using deep neural networks. The effects of cyclical intermittent hypoxia on mice will also be studied to build an in-silico model to determine drug treatment options using deep neural networks. Additionally, the project will involve designing AI learning algorithms for in-vivo model deployment that determines mortality risks in lung cancer cohorts.
Two college faculty members are the recipients of funding from The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University’s Museum Innovation Fund. This fund provides support to Drexel faculty and students for projects that promote conception and rapid prototyping of innovative approaches to museum learning and engagement. Divya Bhargava, PhD, assistant teaching professor of mechanical engineering and mechanics, received funds for her project, “Engineering Solutions to reduce Plastic Pollution in Philadelphia’s Rivers.” A class of Drexel engineering students studying the theory behind Systems Engineering methodologies will develop innovative solutions to real-world problems shared by Academy staff. The Academy will work with the class to develop a problem statement related to plastic pollution in Philadelphia’s waterways. The class of 140 students will each research, then iterate a series of prototypes based upon feedback to their designs as they work toward developing innovative solutions and sparking public discussion. Simi Hoque, PhD, associate professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering and program head of architectural engineering, received funds for her project, “Student-designed Green Water Infrastructure Demonstration. Rising eighth and ninth grade girls, students participating in the EUREKA! Program hosted by Girls Inc. of Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey, and Drexel’s Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering will work with Westphal Design faculty and Academy staff to develop a public demonstration of green storm water engineering. The students will learn about innovative approaches to water engineering as well as effective approaches to informal learning while bringing their unique insights and perspectives to a new Academy Water Year offering.
