Digital Photography in Prague
Virtual Study Abroad Opportunity
July 5 - August 6, 2021
ART 140 - 3 Credits
Program Fee: $250 (estimate) + PCC Tuition
Just because we are unable to travel in Summer 2021, doesn't mean that we can't still have an Education Abroad experience.
Join instructor Kim Manchester and her counterpart in Prague as you journey through the history, language, food and foraging culture of the Czech Republic. Topics covered, in addition to the Digital Photography curriculum are: Sustainability and leave no trace principles, foraging and gathering traditions that tie both the Pacific Northwest and the Czech Republic, fermentation, herbal medicines, and the impact of climate and political policies on local foods and farms.
You will also be introduced to and explore the rich language, political and social history of Prague and contemporary and historical connections between cinema, photography and the LGBTQI representation in the Arts and Culture of the Czech Republic and Prague.
To learn more about Kim's class, visit her website.
THEME: FORAGING
The Czech Republic and Pacific Northwest share a similar climate that provides for traditions of foraging that go back before the establishment of the cities of Prague and Portland. We will explore the places where huckleberries, blueberries and mushrooms grow seasonally on foot and with our cameras.
THEME: STREET MARKET
The farmer's market culture is rich in both of our cities and food grown locally and sustainably is a point of pride. As photographers, we will be discussing, engaging and creating images that address issues surrounding documentary photography, photographing people & communities, as well as how to illustrate a food culture through images.
THEME: GARDEN, HERBS, and COOKING
We will have opportunities to learn to cook with spices, herbs that are specific to the cuisine of The Czech Republic - many of which are easily obtained and grown at home here in Portland.
Check out the pages on our OISS website for more great
information and tips!
