District Restaurants Garner Praise, and Recent Openings
There are also some exciting new openings! Adding to their extensive beer tap offerings and bottle store, City Beer Store is now also home to a new California-influenced restaurant: Family Name. In an Instagram post they note, "We've been planning, tasting, and styling out a restaurant within our walls that has its own identity while retaining the warmth and friendliness you've come to know the past 15 years at City Beer Store. " They also shared they've added Executive Chef Max Bauer to the City Beer Store kitchen team.

While down the street, another great addition to the Mid Market restaurant scene: The Bite, has opened at 996 Mission St. Featuring Mediterranean cuisine, the menu offers a variety of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options.
Also, another great addition to the neighborhood is the Halal-Stop. Serving gyros, kebabs, sandwiches and more; find then at 22 6th St.
And for dessert, check out the newly opened Baltimore snowcone shop, Kash Daddy's. An East Coast treat, this is the first Baltimore snowcone shop in San Francisco, and is found at 1055 Market St.

Popular streetwear brand BAIT has moved the District. Now open at 1091 Market St., it joins other streetwear and skateboarding stores in the District such as Supreme and Thrasher.

Market Street Housing at Center of SF Chronicle Story
Recently the San Francisco Chronicle wrote a piece on the struggles and triumphs of Market Street for business owners and residents alike. Also of note was the increase in housing coming to Mid Market, and how this is lining up to add more life to the public realm, in combination with the return of office employees and tourists: "For Market on Market and other retailers, the addition of thousands of new residents will be positive, but future success will be at least be somewhat dependent on the return of office workers and tourists."

6th Street Pedestrian Safety Project Updates
Construction on the permanent changes to the 6th Street corridor are readying to begin this Fall, with construction lasting into 2024. Construction will likely be broken up into 4 segments -- Howard to Mission east side; Howard to Mission west side; Mission to Market east side; Mission to Market west side. See the SFMTA and Public Works sites for more updates on this project as it moves forward.

Better Market Street Updates
Better Market Street finalized design concepts for Phase 1 (Market between 5th and 8th streets) in September with construction slated to begin early 2022. It will take place on weekends over the course of two years, when the F-line is not running.
Upgrades during Phase 1 include:
• Repaving curb lanes, intersections and crosswalks
• Constructing ADA-compliant curb ramps and bulb outs
• Replacing sidewalks at the corners
• Installing new trees and bike racks
• Installing catch basins near 6th to improve drainage
• Limited utility work (water and AWSS) triggered by curb ramp and bulb-out work.
Currently, the Project continues to deliver quick-build improvements along Market Street:
• The speed limit has been lowered to 20 MPH between Franklin and Steuart streets
• To continue to understand how best to balance safety and access, SFMTA will analyze how transit, taxis and bikes interact along segments of the street with “Muni-only lane” markings versus street segments with “Muni- and taxi-only lane” markings
• This fall, they also anticipate installing the required right turn at Hayes Street for westbound vehicles (except transit, taxis and bikes)

They also note there will be some changes affecting bike traffic during construction:
• Maintaining 7’ of bike space on weekdays in peak directions to accommodate rush hour
• No bike access to Market
-(southside 9:30am – 7pm weekdays)
-(northside 7am – 4:30pm weekdays
-(Both sides 7am – 7pm Saturdays
• 7' space available all other times
• No bike accommodation on Market during the three two-week full closures

BEI Converts Some Units to Residences
BEI Hotel has converted 120 of its 396 rooms to residential units, according to the SF Business Times. These units will be overseen by the co-living company Common, who notes the "micro-units" are furnished, have access to a shared floor kitchenette and hotel amenities. In the article, Common’s executive vice president of property management, said in a statement: "we’ve been looking for new ways to bring additional apartment stock to San Francisco in strategic and sometimes unconventional ways."

City Proposes Buying the Panoramic for Supportive Housing
The Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing (HSH) held a public comment meeting on the proposed purchase of The Panoramic in SoMa (160 units at 1321 Mission St.) for supportive housing; purchasing it with funds from Prop. C, federal funds, and the state-funded Project Homekey. The public comment meetings were filled with many differing opinions. Visit the HSH site to learn more.

SFCTA Congestion Study Continues
The San Francisco County Transit Authority is extending the timeline of the Downtown Congestion Pricing Study due to changes surrounding traffic conditions and transit use. Public outreach will now continue into 2022. If a pricing structure is to be established, it would take five years to implement a congestion pricing system. More on their site: sfcta.org/downtown

Tiny Homes for the Unhoused Slated for Current Safe Sleeping Village
The Safe Sleeping Village located at 33 Gough, just outside the District, is readying to replace the tents with more permanent tiny houses that the City is referring to as cabins, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Part of a pilot program, each cabin will come with a bed, desk, chair, window and heat. The City notes the 70 tiny houses will also be more cost effective as more cabins can fit in the space than tents, which there are currently only 44 of in the space. The cabins will replace the tents in late fall.

Shared Spaces Goes Permanent, Permit Info
In July the Board of Supervisors unanimously passed the Shared Spaces legislation, which means the outdoor dining Shared Spaces are now allowed to become permanent. In the months following this, Shared Spaces released more information on making your Shared Spaces a permanent location.

Skybridge on Stevenson Street Parties Return
The popular Skybridge on Stevenson Thursday evening events have returned! Running through November 18, these all-ages events feature DJs, dance performances, and food offerings from District spots Montesacro and The Grilled Chez Guy. Make sure to look for the illuminated Filipino-inspired lanterns lining the street as well!

MMCBD's field crews continue to address the District's safety and sanitation needs - especially as heavy foot traffic returns. As part of this, starting in quarter 4, we're increasing our pressure washing hours to include nighttime services as well.
