Patient and Health Care Advocates and Patient Autonomy: Applying the Principles in Practice
Autonomy is a fundamental bioethical principle and legal concept emphasized in western culture. In healthcare, autonomy is the right of the individual to make informed decisions about their care.
As stated in the Patient and Health Care Advocate Code of Ethics, advocates work with clients who desire assistance navigating complex medical and other situations, supporting their ability to make individual and well-informed decisions. The Code of Ethics expressly recognizes that advocacy is
grounded in the bioethical principle of autonomy, maleficence, non-maleficence, and justice.
This webinar reviews the scope and the limits of autonomy. The differences between legal and ethical aspects of autonomy and how autonomy impacts the patient and health care advocate’s practice.
Learning Objectives:
- Recognize the scope and the limits of autonomy.
- Identify the differences between legal and ethical aspects of autonomy.
- Describe how autonomy impacts the patient/health advocate's practice.
