October Is Pastor Appreciation Month
Pastor Joke Of The Week -

A pastor known for his lengthy sermons, noticed a man get up and leave during the middle of his message. The man returned just before the conclusion of the service. Afterwards the pastor asked the man where he had gone.

"I went to get a haircut," was the reply.

"But," said the pastor, "why didn't you do that before the service?"

"Because," the gentleman said, "I didn't need one then."
From your Clerk of Session
Notice of Congregational Meeting
There will be a Called Congregational Meeting this Sunday, October 10, immediately following worship for the purpose of filling the vacancy on the Session created by the passing of Elder Priscilla Meadows.

The Nominating Committee is unanimously recommending Ruling Elder and former Treasurer Vici Churchman to fill this vacancy.
Christian Education Building Update
The CE Building Renovation project has now - as of today - received the required permits to get started.

Interior demolition, asbestos removal, and slab removal will occur over the next couple of weeks beginning on October 14 and completing by 10/27. Construction starts on 11/1 with a targeted completion by the end of the year. The facility will be surrounded by fencing for safety purposes during this time.

Any questions please feel free to contact Brian Parker or Gary Westerman.
To the Congregation:

Please be advised that the Session has established a Bylaws Review Committee to look at the Bylaws and recommend updates. The Bylaws were last updated in 2014. The goal is to have the recommendations ready to present to the Session in January and the Congregation shortly thereafter. A vote on the recommendations is set for the Annual Meeting in February.

The Bylaws can be found here: Current-Bylaws-6-1.pdf (woodhavenpres.org)

The members of the Bylaws Review Committee are: Keith Paul, Robin Sullivan, and Sid Wells. Feel free to reach out to them and provide your suggestions.

In His Service,
Brian Parker
Stewardship
Proverbs offers a lot of pithy one-liners that can be used to reflect on our call to stewardship and generosity. They could even be used as a basis for a stewardship campaign, like Proverbs 3:9.
It is helpful to see it in the larger context as well, not only is this a call to give generously from our first fruits, it is a reminder to trust in God, follow God, and seek God's wisdom. All of these are forms of stewardship and all are deserving of our attention and reflection, even as we seek to inspire generous financial giving.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; think about Him in all your ways, and He will guide you on the right paths. Don’t consider yourself to be wise;
fear the Lord and turn away from evil. This will be healing for your body and strengthening for your bones. Honor the Lord with your possessions and with the first produce of your entire harvest; Proverbs 3:5-9

Share your time, talent, and tithes.

New Bylaws Working Group
The Woodhaven session has approved a new working group whose purpose is to review and update our church’s bylaws prior to the 2022 Annual Meeting. The group’s members include Keith Paul, Robin Sullivan, and Sid Wells. The group asks for and would appreciate any comments or thoughts you might have about the bylaws. You can find the current bylaws on the Woodhaven website - Woodhaven's Current Bylaws - or look for paper copies in the church narthex.

Please provide your feedback to Keith at [email protected], Robin at [email protected], or Sid at [email protected] before October 31, 2021. Many thanks for your involvement!

You are invited to join us in the many opportunities offered at Woodhaven onsite and virtually:

Lessons & Fellowship
Everyone (no matter how old you are!) is invited to joins us right after Worship for a time of Lessons and Fellowship outdoors. Together we will enjoy activities based on the Bible story or passage presented in Worship that morning. This exciting new opportunity will start on Oct 17 at 11:45ish

Children's Sunday School
The children have been having weekly Sunday School/faith formation lessons in their homes, and will continue to do so for the immediate future. Starting on October 17, the children are invited to join everyone for Lessons and Fellowship every week, if they feel comfortable.

Adult Sunday School
The Spirit Seekers class meets on site and in person on Sunday mornings in Hancock Hall at 9:00am. Right now they are reading and discussing the book If God is Love, Don’t Be a Jerk—Finding a Faith that Makes Us Better Humans

Presbyterian 101 Class
This is a new offering that will meet onsite in the Sanctuary and begins on Sunday, October 17 at 12:00. The Presbyterian 101 class is 5-6 weeks long and will be offered multiple times a year on an as needed basis. Contact Pastor Shane if you are interested in joining.

LEGO Robotics
Through the process of designing robots to perform certain tasks, children ages 6-14 learn confidence and problem solving. Please talk to Heather Meese if you or your child are interested in joining us.

Green Team
In the Creation story, God tasked humans with taking care of the Earth. Earlier this year, Woodhaven voted to start the process to become an Earth Care Congregation. If you are passionate about taking care of all the gifts of Creation that God gave us, you are encouraged to join this group of people.

Christ Care Group
The Christ Care Bible Study Group is open to all women of Woodhaven (members as well as visitors) who would like to participate.  They use the Presbyterian Women (PW) Bible study offered by the PC(USA) and meet once a month onsite. They are currently on hiatus, but you are encouraged to contact Hallie Spence if you are interested in this ministry.
Pub Theology
Folks of all ages meet and have thought provoking discussions about theology and current events while enjoying a special drink of their choice. This group meets virtually or at a designated location in Irving once a month. Please talk to Pastor Shane if you are interested in finding out more.

Advent
As the time of Advent rolls around and we eagerly await the birth of Jesus Christ, we gather as a church family. This year Advent begins with the traditional Hanging of the Greens on November 27. Be sure to watch and listen to church communications about this and all the fun events during the season of Advent.

Lent
Lent is the time to help us get ready to enter the Mystery of Easter. Just like Advent, there are many traditions that Woodhaven celebrates during the season of Lent. Keep an eye out for more information about Lent events as the season gets closer.

Summer
The summer is a time of rest and renewal in the life of the church. One of the great traditions is vacation Bible school, where this year’s theme will be “Knights of the North Castle”. Be on the lookout for more information about VBS 2022!

Music
Music is the gift God gives us to express our greatest praise, our deepest longings, our joys, and our sorrows.

Rehearsals are each Wednesday at 4:00 pm and Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m., and we sing in worship at 10:30 a.m.
·      Alleluia Ringers
Right now the Bell Choir is on hiatus, but when it resumes, rehearsals will be at 9:30am on Sundays
 ·      Children’s Choir
There might be rumblings about starting a Children’s Choir again. If you are interest in this ministry, please talk to Hallie Spence.
