NORTHWOODS NOTEBOOKS
with Corlis Taylor

Back by popular demand! The "Northwoods Notebooks" which we made over two years ago at a program meeting of NBG! This handy, one-of-a-kind notebook is perfect for holding NBG meeting and workshop notes, tracking progress on your New Year's resolutions, sketching ideas for future projects, or collaging artful papers and images. The notebooks, with pages measuring 7.25 x 4.5", will be bound with 1-inch spiral coils.

A variety of decorative and repurposed papers will be provided to use as notebook pages, and you can personalize your notebook with some of your own, if you like.  You are encouraged to bring material for your front and back covers - decorated file folders, painted (or plain) watercolor paper, or any heavy cardstock. We will have some recycled colored folders available for you to use for covers, if needed. We will cut them to size and punch the covers' holes at the meeting.

Bring to the meeting:
Cutting mat, X-Acto knife, ruler, bone folder
Material, uncut, for your covers (optional, but encouraged)
Pages cut to 7.25 x 4.5 (optional)

WORKSHOP
Fall Flora & The Artist's Book
with Guest Artist Andie Thrams

Only 3 spaces left!

Friday evening, August 24, 6-8pm
Saturday and Sunday, August 25 and 26, 10am - 4pm
NBG Studio

Cost $200, includes $45 materials fee

Explore the elusive creative space between the careful and the wild as you create an accordion-folding book. Native flora will be used as inspiration for drawing, painting, and writing in both traditional and non-traditional ways. Directed experiments using watercolor, ink, and gouache will develop imagery and content, full of autumn magic.

Andie Thrams is a Sierra Nevada-based visual artist. A lifelong devotion to creative work in wilderness habitats, especially within the pages of her field journals, has evolved into artist's books and paintings held in private and public collections throughout the United States. Her work is widely exhibited and has been honored by institutions including the Sitka Center for Art & Ecology and Yosemite Renaissance. Andie earned a BA in art practice from the University of California at Berkeley, and she regularly teaches outdoor art workshops.

IMPRINTS UPDATE

Over the past month, IMPRINTS has continued their work sessions and have accomplished a variety of tasks as we bind our edition of IMPRINTS, the first publication of Northwoods Press.   Text blocks are  waiting  for the final printing of  auxiliary   pages as we work on constructing the covers for our drum leaf bindings. Each work session focuses on 2 or 3 set tasks, so you can join the process at any time. Instruction provided!

Many members already receive the NBG NOTES that announce the work sessions, but if you are not receiving them and would like to, please let us know here.  Join us in this exciting phase of binding IMPRINTS!

NORTHWOODS BOOK ARTS GUILD LIBRARY
BOOK REVIEW
This begins a series of reviews of books available in the Guild's Library.
Books, Boxes & Wraps: Binding & Building  Step-by-Step
by Marilyn Webberley & JoAn Forsyth
This is a terrific workbook with excellent illustrations and descriptions for creating a large number and variety of structures, filled with many helpful tips.  There is an excellent chapter, "Binders's Tool Chest," that covers the construction of knots and closures, adhesives, various types of materials used, and a paper chart specially geared to book arts that lists the pH, weight, whether mold or man-made, deckle edges, etc. of the major papers available to book artists. (The only oversight is that Khadi paper is not mentioned!) And finally, being book artists, they have even made sure that this book is bound so it opens out flat - as a good workbook should!
