2022 - 2023 Maryland Cover Crop Program

Sign-up will open on July 1st and run to July 18th. The base rate has been raised and the incentive payment for rye and mixed-species has increased to $15/acre. More information can be found here.

New This Year - Cover Crop Plus

A new pilot financial incentive program for farmers. Farmers can sign a contract to grow cover crop mixes on the same field for 3 consecutive years. The base payment is $115/acre per year, with the opportunity to get $160/acre. More information can be found here.


Perdue Closes Easton Grain Facility

Perdue closed its long-standing Easton grain mill last month due to a severe decline in business. The facility had been in operation since the 1930s. You can read more on the mill's history and closure here.

Companies Focus on Creating a Carbon Market Foundation


Today, more than a dozen opportunities exist for farmers to be compensated for changed practices that lead to carbon sequestration or a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Read more to see what companies are doing, here.

Frederick County Grant Program to Help 


The county will grant $20 per acre for verified fertilizer purchases. Applications for the Farmer Relief Grant Program will be accepted from June 15t through July 15th. Learn more online here.

Post-Harvest Drone Flights Findings


Jarrod Miller and a team at the University of Delaware recently published research on post-harvest drone flights in correlation with yield and management. It was found that pairing drone flights with in-season data and projects designed to measure the effects of management practices on shading, weed production, or crop stresses may benefit from post-harvest flights. Legislation - Lower Gas Prices


The U.S. House of Representatives approved legislation that would expand consumer access. to higher biofuel blends that save consumers money at the pump and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Ethanol is currently priced around $1.20 less per gallon than unblended gasoline at wholesale, and drivers are saving 30 to 40 cents or more per gallon where retailers offer E15. Read more here.

States Challenge Findings of Chesapeake Computer Modeling


State officials have voiced strong concerns about updated Chesapeake Bay computer modeling that shows little overall progress in controlling nutrient runoff from farmland. State officials questioned the new results at recent meetings and in written comments, citing uncertainties with the underlying data. Read the full article here.

Weed Management Twilight


Come out to the Wye Research and Education Center on June 29th for the third stop of the Delmarva Weed Tour. Tours will be available for corn and soybean herbicide research trials, an integrated weed management project for vegetables, and an update on using drones to apply herbicides.
