Tag Books
with Mary Maisch and Margo Klass

Join us on November 17 for a fun, seasonal "Tag Book" project. We will cut gift tags from mixed-media papers, and embellish them using a variety of surface design techniques. We will paint, stamp, and collage the tags, then insert them in a handy little booklet to keep or to give this holiday season. Materials will be provided, but you are encouraged to bring surface design materials to share: markers, pens, colored pencils, rubber stamps, ink pads, washi tapes, spray inks, magazine clippings, decorative paper scraps, etc. You will also need a cutting mat, exacto knife, rulers, bone folder, and scissors.

NBG 2017 ANNUAL MEETING

On October 22 members of the Guild gathered at The Folk School for its Annual Meeting. We celebrated another year of our bookmaking community over steaming pots of tea and plates of yummy cookies. A low-key silent auction that featured unusual and often unique bookmaking tools and materials made sure each of us went home with new inspiration for making books.

The business meeting was brief and concluded with the unanimous election of the following slate of officers for the coming year:
President: Mary Maisch
Vice President: Susan Campbell
Treasurer: Kathy Dietrich
Secretary: Connie Stricks

Outgoing President Margo Klass congratulated the newly elected officers and expressed gratitude to the ever-widening community of bookmakers in Fairbanks and beyond for their participation in and contributions to the overall program of the Guild. She reminisced how the Guild has grown since November 2011 when 14 people answered a call to meet and talk about bookmaking and how we might meet regularly to share our work and learn from each other. Now, five years later, the Guild is established with over 60 members and a program that promotes book arts through education, exhibitions, and outreach. We invite all who are interested in the book arts to join us as we look forward to continuing the work of Northwoods Book Arts Guild!

In conclusion she presented a letterpress broadside to the Guild titled "The Beauties of Bookbinding," an essay by Oscar Wilde. The editioned broadside was produced in 2002 to commemorate Wilde's 120th anniversary visit to St. Paul, Minnesota. It will hang in the Guild's studio at The Folk School.
