JASON'S REFLECTIONS
on Sunday's New Testament Reading

Well, it has been another one of those long weeks that feel more like a few months. I imagine that you have had similar weeks in this most unusual of years. So, on that note, I'm going to keep my reflection short and instead share a video that brought me some joy and consolation this week. But first, I'm going to give you a quick update about in-person worship and my recent stewardship letter.

First, we will have in-person worship that will be live-streamed on Facebook. You do not need to have a Facebook account to watch it though. Just click the link and it will take you right to the video. If you do attend the liturgy in person, please be sure to follow all safety guidelines.

Second, the stewardship letter has a very short sentence right at the spot where you tear off the slip that says, "...turn in on November 8." That date, which is a week from this Sunday, will be the Sunday that we hold our special in-gathering celebration. However, if you can not attend that Sunday, you can always send the slip in via mail or e-mail, or feel free to drop off in person during the week. Thank you for your faithful commitment to Advent.

Now to my reflection. On this All Saints weekend, when we honor all of ordinary the women and men who have led extraordinary lives of service to God and to their communities, this short excerpt from St. John's first of three very short epistles reminds us that all of us, saints and sinners, who have put our trust in the love and grace of Jesus Christ, hold the status of "children" of God. All humans are a child of God in one sense of the word, but to be a child of God in the sense that St. John means, I believe, is to be someone who holds a very deep and inextricable emotional and spiritual bond between the creature and the creator. In other words, to be a child of God is to be someone who truly depends on the love and grace of God in their daily lives--just like children do today with their parents, grandparents, or guardians.

This video reminded me this week that although many adults, who (over)value the concept of independence and rugged self-reliance, discount the experience and insight that children bring to our lives, especially their capacity to depend on the ties that bind them to the ones that love them. With that in mind, let our ears be open to their wisdom. They might just help us be better at being children of God.

Amen.

A National Service for Healing and Wholeness
Sunday November 1 at 4pm
Presiding Bishop Michael Curry will lead a live-streamed prayer service from Washington National CathedralHolding on to Hope: A National Service for Healing and Wholeness, on All Saints Sunday, November 1, at 4:00-5:30 p.m. EST. In the midst of a pandemic, racial reckoning, and a historic election, the live-streamed service will gather Americans for prayer, song, lament, hope, and a call to love God and neighbor. The event will be simulcast in English and Spanish.

In addition to Bishop Curry’s sermon, the service will include reflections from Father James Martin, a noted Roman Catholic commentator on American life and values, and Valarie Kaur, an inspiring Sikh author, filmmaker, and civil rights attorney.
