Educators of the Year
Congratulations to our Hallsville faculty, staff, and administration for their recent nomination and selection for Hallsville Educators of the Year. Each year, the Hallsville Chamber of Commerce selects an educator to honor for their hard work and dedication to the Hallsville School District.

Logan Carter, Mayor of Hallsville and Hallsville parent, nominated the district staff for their work during this unprecedented time. He states, “This year I could not choose one staff member that deserves this award. The decisions, preparation, and follow through that have allowed our children's education to continue through pandemic has been second to none. While many larger districts in our area have struggled, I feel Hallsville provided a model example. From online to in-seat learning, the entire Hallsville staff and administration deserve this award”

Superintendent Update
November
As always, our goals are to keep our students and staff safe while also providing the highest quality of education. We often get questions from parents on how they can best help us to meet these goals in light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The first step is to review the district's return to school plans, which were crafted to slow and reduce the spread in an effort to keep everyone healthy and allow our schools to remain open. The second step is to continue doing our part outside of school to help reduce the spread. By working together, we can limit the impact of COVID-19 on our schools and community.
Increasing positive cases and quarantines have the potential to halt in-seat instruction due to the number of students absent from school and staff shortages. In addition to student absences, choices made outside of school can also have an impact on continuing to provide in-seat instruction. Please help us in our ongoing efforts to both reduce the spread of the virus and also keep school in session by staying vigilant in observing both CDC recommendations and local health orders, both within and outside of Boone County. This includes ensuring your child follows guidance provided by the health department if he or she is placed into quarantine.
We understand these protocols were not part of everyday life prior to the pandemic and can be inconvenient, but they are extremely important for the continuation of in-person learning. By working together as a community, we can reduce the spread of the virus to keep one another healthy and keep our students in school. We appreciate your continuing support and partnership.

October Highlights
RECOGNITIONS
Justin Nichols, Transportation Department, & Cunningham Performance were recognized for receiving a 100% rating with no defects identified during an unscheduled bus inspection from the Highway Patrol. The district appreciates the steps taken to ensure our buses are safe for all our students.
Sarah Bradshaw, Leigh Pemberton, Whitney Meyers, & Sarah Wulff were recognized for their hard work on the Student Success Team at Hallsville Primary School. They have worked together to host a Title I family meeting and provide academic, behavioral, and mental health support to primary students.
CONSENT AGENDA
Evaluation of Instructional Effectiveness and Parents as Teachers Programs: Faculty and administration are committed to providing rigorous, high quality curriculum and instruction that meets the educational needs of all students. With each program evaluation, strengths, concerns, and future recommendations are reviewed.
DISTRICT REPORTS
Annual Performance Report: In late September, DESE announced that Annual Performance Reports (APRs) will not be generated for Missouri districts this year. This is due to the lack of data on several key state accountability measures such as MAP/EOC tests not being administered last spring. Some of the MSIP data used to produce the APR have been collected, and the district is currently completing data corrections for graduates and other College and Career Readiness measures. Once completed, the district’s balanced scorecard will be updated.
Federal Programs Monitoring: This is the year for our triennial federal programs evaluation. Representatives from DESE will review district documentation on programs serving Title I, English Learners, and homeless students, among others.
Food Services: The district applied for and was granted a Seamless Summer Option (SSO) food service waiver in late September. The waiver allows for free feeding of all children in the district with federal reimbursement of all breakfast and lunch meals (excluding a la carte and extra meal purchases).
Superintendent Student Advisory Council (SSAC): This SSAC held their first meeting in October. Middle and high school students invited to participate based on the recommendation of the building staff, who were tasked with identifying groups of students who would represent a diverse cross‐section of the student population.The SSAC groups plan to meet a few times per school year to discuss a wide variety of topics.
100th Graduating Class: This year Hallsville High School will celebrate its 100th graduating class. With the help of Charlie Harlow, we have been researching how our community came together to create the high school and centralize our students. Prior to 1920, students would go to small neighborhood K-8 schools scattered across Boone County, and then, they could choose to continue their education for grades 9-11 located in three separate houses near the four-way stop area. The Wright and Carpenter families donated approximately five acres of land in 1919 as a site to build Hallsville High School. Construction began shortly after that, and the students were able to move into the new high school at the beginning of 1920. In the spring of 1921, Hallsville High School graduated the first official class of students. This spring, we will celebrate the graduation of the 100th class of seniors and are actively looking for ways for people to come together to celebrate this milestone.
Primary School Professional Development: The Primary School is focusing on implementing Positive Behavior Interventions and Support this year. Our PBIS team is receiving training from Dr. Morris with the University of Missouri. Our goal is to refine our PBIS protocols and implement behavior systems to best support our students.
NEW BUSINESS
Lease-Purchase Buses: Several weeks ago, the district posted an RFP for potential purchases of replacement school buses. Quotes were received from three vendors. The Board approved the purchase of five 77‐passenger Thomas buses from Midwest Bus Sales with dashboard air conditioning and no extended warranty. The approved FY21 budget includes an expense allocation in the amount of the estimated lease‐purchase payment for this year.
The next regular session Board of Education meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, November 18, 2020, at 6:00 p.m. in the secondary cafeteria.

Rude, Mean, Bullying?
See Something, Say Something
Last week, students across our district had lessons on recognizing, addressing, and helping to prevent bullying. These lessons will continue over the school year by our counselors and teachers who are trained to recognize signs of bullying. Kayla Lewis, our new middle school counselor, provided a lesson to 7th grade students reviewing common scenarios and discussed what about a situation makes it mean, rude, or bullying. These discussions help students recognize the difference and what they can do to be an upstander in either situation.
Any school staff member responds immediately when witnessing aggression or bullying, referring the aggressor for discipline or services and counseling the victim. Our staff also utilizes consistent language to support our students in difficult situations: rude, mean, or bullying.
If a student or parent would like to report an anonymous bullying report, each school has a Bullying Incident Form available on the district website here which is then sent directly to building level administrators.

HHS National Honor Society is hosting an American Red Cross Blood Drive on Thursday, November 12 from 2:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. at the Hallsville Community Center. You can register by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS or online here.
H.C.D.A. Drive-Thru Brat Dinner
The Hallsville Community Development Association is hosting a drive-thru brat dinner fundraiser tonight, Friday, November 6 from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at the Hallsville Fairgrounds. Dinner includes a brat or beef hotdog, sauerkraut, baked beans, chips, and a drink for $7.
The Food Bank of Central & Northeast Missouri is providing food at no charge to those in need. The Hallsville Drive Up Pantry is scheduled on the fourth Tuesday of every month from 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. at Hallsville Baptist Church. Please contact the church at 573-696-3621 the third week of the month to set up an appointment.
