Supporting the safety and well-being of our entire community.
Fall has always been a busy season, and this year, like last year, has held excitement as well as apprehensions. A time of change, the hustle bustle of back-to-school, and preparations for the holiday season have kept us all moving fast.

Over the last few months, there has been lots on the go at YW Calgary, and we are pleased to share some with you.
Family Violence Prevention Month

The Province of Alberta recognizes November as Family Violence Prevention Month – a time to shed light on this complex issue, open difficult conversations, and encourage individuals in our community to learn more about ways they can help. YW Calgary’s new Women’s Economic Prosperity program has developed some great material and events to mark this month. They are hosting free, virtual events as well as informative blogs and resources that will be shared on YW social media platforms - @ywcalgary - and on our website throughout the month.

You are invited to attend the virtual Activism through the Arts night on November 12, 2021 from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm. This free event will highlight the work of two local artists and share their domestic violence activism efforts through different creative mediums. Maryam Ejaz, a filmmaker will be screening her short film, Purple Kisses - the story of a young South Asian woman living in an abusive marriage. The second artist is Claudia Chagoya, an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores gender-based violence through the lens of her socio-political background. She will be showcasing her current installation A Rose for Remembrance, can be viewed at the Calgary Arts Commons. Registration for this event is available on Eventbrite. RSVP today!

You can find other resources, activities and information on YW’s website through the Women’s Economic Prosperity.Keep up with what our province is doing by using the hashtags #WhereToTurn or #GoPurpleAB. Together we can end Family Violence.

National Child Day
National Child Day is November 20, and this year celebrates the 30th anniversary of Canada’s ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

This year’s national theme is The Right to Survive and Thrive, drawing from Article 6 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which affirms that children have a right to access what they need to develop to the fullest extent possible.

YW teams are collaborating with the Alberta National Child Day Coalition, a consortium of nearly 40 organizations committed to elevating the day through events, media, and activities to engage and educate our communities on Children’s Rights.

Several of our teams are pitching in to hold a series of workshops, videos, and activities leading up to November 20th. Links to all events and videos are available on the YW Calgary National Child Day page. The teams have also prepared National Child Day focused activities for the families and children they work with.
And the Building Came Down!
The YW Sheriff King Home Site Redevelopment Project continues to progress. The original building, in operation for nearly 40 years was demolished in October. How quickly it came down! All demolished materials were hauled off-site for sorting and recycling.

The project team has been diligently reviewing drawings, making decisions on exterior and interior finishes and adjusting the plans as required to ensure that both the housing and shelter buildings will meet the needs of women and children fleeing domestic violence.

YW recognizes this project creates some added disruption and activity for our immediate neighbors in the area, your patience and support has been, and continues to be greatly appreciated. We are excited to share with you a few updates on the project page
Healthy Space Encourages Membership Growth at YW Fitness
It has been wonderful to see so many new, and returning members to YW Fitness following the implementation of our Vaccine Exemption Program at the end of October. We are thrilled that new and existing members feel this is a safe and welcoming environment in which to continue, or advance their wellness routines.

Our personal training partner, Every Body Stronger continues to offer specialized training in the centre, and we are excited to be launching another personal training opportunity for members very soon. Stay tuned for updates on that, as well as our new ‘Refer a Friend’ initiative. For more information, or to sign up for a membership, check out our website or email fitness@ywcalgary.ca
