After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. (Revelation 7:9)

What is this great multitude? Who are these people?

Simply consider- who are the ones who have gone before you that you remember with gratitude because of their courage to act on what they believe? Who are the holy men and women, who have helped you find your way to your own inner holiness? They are part of the great multitude that no one could count.

Reflecting on the hoy ones whom we have known is a wise practice. It helps us to see and be grateful for the weave of God 's love through those who have come in and out of our lives. Such a practice reminds us, that we too, are called to live out of our own goodness and holiness - to be both vessel and expression of the Divine.

A Practice of Remembering
Have near you a small container, such as a cup, bowl, basket or small box, and at least 20 small pieces of paper.

Sit quietly. Consider those who have called you to deeper faith, to a closer union with God. These might be people you have known personally, people you know from scripture or history; they may be spiritual and theological authors, poets, singers or artists- anyone who has inspired you and stirred your deep desire to be faithful to the Christ-like goodness within you.

As persons and names come to mind, write their name on one of your small pieces of paper. Ask yourself: What has this person's life taught me about God and how to live my life well? Jot a few key words about this person on the slip of paper. Place it in your container.

As each one goes in, whisper "thank you" for the gift of that person. Don't rush this process of remembering. Take the time you need to remember well.

After the names are in the container, lay your hands on it and pray a prayer of gratitude. (More people may come to mind later on; if so, continue to add these names to the container.)

For the month of November keep the container of names on a prayer altar, a desk, table, or any place in your home where you will see it.

May it remind you to live
~each day in thanksgiving for all who have accompanied you on your path of life and faith.
~mindful that your inner holiness and goodness contributes to the world's transformation.
