News Release November 4, 2020

Monroe County School officials continue to monitor cases of Covid -19 as additional students reported positive tests, requiring more students to be quarantined at home on Wednesday, November 4.

Since Tuesday, November 3, an additional four middle school students were diagnosed with Covid-19. This brings the total for the week to seven students at Monroe County Middle, along with three students at Mary Persons High School and one at K. B. Sutton Elementary School.

Superintendent Dr. Mike Hickman voiced his concern over the growing numbers, but also commended school administrators for their efforts to track and trace the Covid cases and exposures. "We aren't happy with the trend of increasing cases we are seeing," said Hickman. "We will continue to monitor this situation and follow the guidelines the state has provided.  We are pleased, however, with the way our school leadership is handling these cases and keeping our students as safe as possible."

The school system continues to follow the guidelines of the Department of Public Health which classifies close contact as being within six feet of the person with Covid-19 for 15 minutes or more.  When this is determined, parents of affected students are asked to quarantine their children at home for a specified period of time. Appropriate information from public health is provided to the parents as guidance.

The school system continues to urge the following actions to combat the spread of Covid and all other illnesses:
  • Wear masks when at school, on the school bus, or in public areas.
  • Maximize distancing in all public settings.
  • Stay home when you are sick, except to get medical care.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash and wash your hands.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water or approved hand sanitizer.
