Evangelical Friends Mission’s 2023 Easter Offering is now available at https://friendsmission.com/easter/. Jesus’ Passion for the world takes center stage during Holy Week. In the week between Palm Sunday and Easter, Jesus guaranteed the fulfillment of his famous words, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” His passion was clear.

For 60 years, Evangelical Friends Mission has partnered with Friends Churches across the U.S. You may be aware that together we have sensed the Lord leading us to embrace a next expression of John 3:16. Together, we have recently kicked off year three of our Five-Year Goal that is fueled by the Luke 10 Initiative. Our goal is to send ten new missionary households to five new fields by 2025. We are grateful to the Lord for this. Generous support from God’s people is fueling this progress. This Easter season, we invite you to join us in celebrating and advancing Jesus’ passion. First, consider using the resource “Jesus’ Passion, Our Passion!” This resource, updated from last year’s edition, is intended as a guide to help God’s people to take a deep dive into the beauty of Holy Week. Receive it as an expression of gratitude for your support. You can download more copies at the link above. Also, prayerfully consider propelling the Luke 10 Initiative forward through an Easter offering. Your gifts will help us fuel the movement that was the essence of Jesus’ passion – that all would

experience the transforming power of the Resurrection.

The Disbursement Board is a sub-group within the IYM Stewardship and Finance Committee that manages the disbursement of designated funds to retired pastors. This is not a traditional pension, but a gift to honor faithful service. To qualify, recipients must be a member of the Society of Friends and have served for no less than 10 years as a full-time minister within Indiana Yearly Meeting (including ministry in the mission field) or be a spouse of a qualifying minister. The applicant must be at least 65 years of age, or in poor health as certified by a medical doctor, or in clear and present need as determined by the Disbursement Board and approved by the Stewardship and Finance Committee. The monthly amount disbursed to each recipient varies based on need.

Anyone who believes they or someone they know may be eligible should contact the IYM office or Dane Carter (dane.carter@gmail.com) for an application.

IYM Sunday 2023 will be on April 30th. This is a time where IYM asks the churches and meetings to highlight the work God is doing with us, together in IYM and celebrate that work. And, some churches use this as an opportunity to take up a special offering to put towards the IYM

fundraising efforts. If that date does not work for your church, feel free to choose another Sunday (please let the IYM office know about these changes). If your church would like to invite a special IYM speaker for IYM Sunday, please let us know this as well. A virtual packet of

information, including a new video for IYM Sunday, will be available soon.

Please add the following information about an upcoming Youth Mission Trip to Kenya into your Sunday bulletin:

Eric Dale (IYM Missions Director) and John Muhanji (Africa Ministries Director of FUM) will be leading a team of Indiana and Kenyan youth on a unique and powerful missions experience in Kenya this summer. Expected trip dates are July 28-August 8. The trip is open to youth ages 14-22, as well as adult chaperones. Visit the IYM missions page at https://www.iym.org/page/missions to learn more and complete an application! Application deadline is April 16.

Youth / Young Adult News

The next Young Adult Retreat, also known as DIY Camp, is coming March 24-26. All high school graduates through age 25 are welcome for a weekend of Christ, friends, and fellowship, as well as a bit of learning how to be successful in an adult life!

Friends Summit is a conference that is all about young adults and those who walk along side them having conversations that can change your life. It will take place December 28, 2023 through January 1, 2024 in Houston, TX. It is a gathering of young adults in the Friends movement that is designed to show young adults aged 16-25 how the reality of God's Kingdom is calling the Friends church in mission and engaging them with passion.

This mission is accomplished through worship, general sessions, workshops, and plenty of time and space for conversation. One favorite element of the conference is the Mentor/Advocate that comes to Summit with each young adult and is there to walk alongside that young adult. These Mentor/Advocates should be people that are spiritual leaders in the home meeting, folks who want to have mutually positive relationships with young adults. Most importantly, these mentors need to be people who want to advocate for young adults in their local meeting. If this is something that interests you, please reach out to young adults in your church and be ready to journey alongside them by attending Friends Summit with them.

Gathering Information

The next Pastor Gathering will be held at Farmland Friends on Thursday, March 16th from 10 to 11:30am. Keith Huffman will be sharing a bit about his recent trip to India. We will also be talking about prayer...how we pray, how God may or may not respond in those prayers, how we deal with that and how we can encourage others in their prayer lives. Pastors who are coming are encouraged to come in the third entrance at the south end of the building (the one without a drive through). We'll be meeting in the kitchen and other doors will likely be locked.

The last IYM/FUM Discussion meeting will be held at Lynn Friends on March 23rd, 6:30 pm.

YGB Camp (You're Getting Better not Older) hosted by Western Yearly Meeting (a +55 retreat) will be held Monday, May 22 - Thursday, May 25, at Quaker Haven, $250 per person. All the activities (except for meals) will be in Friendship Lodge so we can’t guarantee that all couples will have a room together, we may have to have dormitory-style rooming. The speaker will be Jane Howard, a former Quaker, and now attends the largest Nazarene Church in North America. She will lead us in devotions and also encourage us in our personal bible study and personal devotion techniques. There will also be worship every morning and every evening and a whole afternoon of free time! Mark Tope will be worship leader. For more information or to sign up, please contact Mark Tope at 336-226-9586 or at k9chester@gmail.com.

A Message from our Superintendent

Good Morning,

In a recent weekend retreat with one of my sons, we were led to Psalm 23 in our devotions. It

was so much fun for me to see that Psalm through his eyes.

We talked about David, who wrote that Psalm. We talked about him slaying Goliath, how he was stalked by Saul who tried many times to murder him, his friendship with Saul’s son, Jonathan, and his mistakes with Bathsheba.

We also talked about how all of those life situations could have led to David writing such a beautiful poem/ prayer.

David mentions within the same Psalm “walk(ing) through darkest valley” and this statement of faith; “Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life.”

I have often thought about the fact that the ‘goodness and love' of God becomes all the more vivid because we have our ‘valley of darkness’ moments. It is because of the dark moments, the moments of light seem that much brighter.

Lord, thank you that you meet us where we are. Whether we are living a ‘dark valley’ moment or we are fully living out a ‘goodness and love’ moment, you are with us. You guide us. You lead us. You protect us. You comfort us. For this, and so much more, we are thankful! In Jesus’ name…Amen!
