Funding boosted for early detection of zoonotic diseases
In an effort to build an early warning system to alert public health partners to potential threats so they can take steps sooner to prevent or limit the next global pandemic, the USDA is dedicating $300 million in American Rescue Plan funds to conduct surveillance for SARS-CoV-2 and other emerging and zoonotic diseases in susceptible animals.

Additional livestock, dairy COVID pandemic assistance rolled out
In an effort to bring additional financial assistance to producers impacted by the pandemic, USDA announced additional COVID aid through its Pandemic Assistance Program targeted at livestock and dairy producers. As part of $6 billion allocated in the consolidated appropriations package advanced in December 2020 and in the American Rescue Plan, USDA is targeting additional assistance to address gaps in aid in initial rounds of aid. The actions include a long-awaited final rulemaking contract producers of livestock and poultry eligible for assistance under the second round of Coronavirus Food Assistance Program, or CFAP 2, as well as changes for dairy assistance.

Study proposes new ways to estimate climate change impact
Most scientists agree climate change has a profound impact on U.S. agricultural production. But estimates vary widely, making it hard to develop mitigation strategies. Two agricultural economists at the University of Illinois took a closer look at how choice of statistical methodology influences climate study results and proposed a more accurate and place-specific approach to data analysis.

What effect does early social contact have on dairy calves’ welfare?
New research in the Journal of Dairy Science® examines the behavioral, performance, and health effects of early socialization among young calves. In addition to needs such as food, water, shelter, and medical care, social contact is an important aspect of welfare for animals, just as it is for humans. Yet early socialization of dairy calves is sometimes given lesser priority in the interest of physical health, with young calves housed individually to prevent the spread of contagious diseases such as those that cause diarrhea, or scours, a major source of calf mortality. In a new study appearing in the Journal of Dairy Science®, scientists from the University of Florida Department of Animal Sciences investigated whether this individually housed tactic is justified and what unintended consequences it may have. New study: Heat stress in dairy cows damages health of calves
As scientists continue to explore the wide-ranging effects of heat stress on the health of dairy cattle, a new study by researchers from the University of Florida, published in the September issue of JDS CommunicationsTM, adds to the growing understanding of the negative influences of heat stress, not just throughout the lifespan but across generations.
The authors speculate that decreased nutrient uptake and reduced immune function following gestational heat stress may lead to reduced health and growth of the calf in the long term. Senior author Geoffrey E. Dahl, PhD, notes that “Acceleration of gut closure appears to occur even before birth and before colostrum consumption. Thus, it may be challenging to reverse after birth, so management efforts should focus on cooling pregnant cows during late gestation.” As the dairy industry continuously strives to improve animal welfare and environmental and financial sustainability, such research is of greater importance than ever. Secretary Vilsack responds
Earlier this year ADSA joined 138 other scientific societies, universities, producer groups and other science-based organizations in a letter congratulating Thomas J. Vilsack on his confirmation as Secretary of Agriculture and urging him to continue supporting increased public investments in agricultural research and development (R&D) programs. Secretary Vilsack recently responded saying:
“I appreciate your efforts to support and increase awareness of the importance of agricultural research and support for increased public investment in food and agricultural research and scientific innovation.
I agree that agricultural research is key to our success in combating climate change and helping farmers and ranchers meet their needs.”
Both letters are included in the ADSA Advocacy section of the website along with other letters and documents.

Conference Reminder - join us for the 41st Discover Conference: “Health Management of Calves: From Intrauterine Life to Successful Weaning”
Make your plans now to attend the 41ST ADSA DISCOVER CONFERENCESM ON FOOD ANIMAL AGRICULTURE - Health Management of Calves: From Intrauterine Life to Successful Weaning. It will be a hybrid conference with the in-person meeting being held October 25-28, 2021 at Eaglewood Resort & Spa in Itasca, IL. Registration options include in-person participation at the Eaglewood Resort & Spa, virtual participation, and a non-participation option which simply gives registrants access to the conference recordings.
The pre-weaning period is critical for the growth and future productivity of replacement animals. However, dairy cattle producers and their veterinarians continue to face important, ongoing, and emerging challenges regarding calf management from intrauterine life to the time of weaning. This conference will explore the many changes in dairy calf management practices, and research conducted over the last decade.
CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
Discover 41 participants, and in particular graduate students, are encouraged to submit a short abstract that describes new and innovative research findings pertaining to one of the five conference topics:
- Fetal Development and Early Life
- Calf Health
- Preweaning Nutrition
- Transition to the Ruminant Calf
- Animal Welfare and Ethics
The call for abstracts is open on the DC41 website. Deadline to submit a title and brief abstract: 11:59 p.m. CDT on August 1, 2021.
Abstract presentations are limited to in-person attendees and will take place in poster format on Tuesday, October 26. This will be a unique opportunity for scientists and allied industry worldwide to interact and discuss the latest scientific findings without boundaries. Abstracts should consist of original, completed work that has not been accepted for publication in a journal, but prior presentation as either an oral or poster presentation within 12 months of the start of the Discover 41 meeting (October 2021) is acceptable. Additional details on abstract submission are available on the website.
