Family Prayer

Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reading I : Isaiah 53:10-11
He shall see light in due time.
  • There are five songs in Isaiah that describe the suffering of a servant of the Lord.
  • Today’s passage was written toward the end of the Babylonian exile.
  • In this last song, with death approaching, the servant’s suffering is revealed as atonement for the guilt of others.

Reading II : Hebrews 4:14-16
We have a great high priest!
  • In Hebrews, the author points out the supremacy of Jesus’ priesthood.
  • Jesus knows our weakness and has shared our suffering.
  • Through Jesus, the great work of God’s salvation has been accomplished.

Gospel : Mark 10:35-45
The first shall be last.
  • In today’s Gospel story, James and John ask for positions of honor in the kingdom.
  • Jesus tells them that the only position they should seek is the position he has assumed, that of a servant.
  • The Gospel of Mark shows the substantial demands placed on Jesus’ followers.

A Message from Mr. Oberdorf
Hello,

On October 8, the teaching staff of SJE attended the Catholic Educators’ Convention. It is always a fun day of learning and socializing for the entire Catholic teaching community. I was asked to do the reading for the prayer service and felt honored to participate in that way. I knew there were a lot of Catholic school educators, but sitting on the stage waiting to read provided a new perspective of just how many people were in attendance. Although seeing all the people in attendance made me a little nervous as I prepared to read, I found it exhilarating seeing the many people dedicated to guiding our children on their faith journey and I felt blessed to be a member of the Catholic schools’ teaching community.

Our 7th/ 8th grade soccer team participated in the playoffs this past weekend and took third place in the league. YAHOO! See below for a picture of these fine athletes.

Our 5th/6th grade team made the soccer playoffs and will play their first game Saturday, October 16 at 3:30 at St. John the Evangelist. Come on out and support the team. GO EAGLES!

Mr. Oberdorf

Box Tops For Education Update

Box Tops have long been a source of income for our Home & School Association. For years families helped out by clipping Box Tops from a variety of grocery items. These little Box Tops are worth 10 cents each. They really add up!

Two years ago, the Box Tops program went paperless. But now is the time to scour your junk drawers at home to find any unexpired paper Box Tops. The next submission date is November 1st. Please turn in any paper Box Tops that you find no later than Wednesday, October 27th.

It’s easy to redeem paperless Box Tops. Do you have a smartphone? Simply download the Box Tops for Education app, set up an account, and choose St. John the Evangelist as the recipient of your Box Top credits. You then scan your receipt and the credit for Box Tops is done automatically. For more information, see the Box Top Website.

No smartphone? You can still send in the receipts from Box Top eligible items to our school office. We will be happy to scan them for you.
