Transportation is one of the most challenging barriers to healthcare for our patients. Many do not have access to private vehicles. For some, public transportation can be tricky when their home is not within walkable distance. It is also time-consuming when time off from work equates to unpaid time. For the high percentage of our patients dealing with chronic conditions, missed appointments and delayed care can be potentially life threatening.

Therefore, we are incredibly excited to celebrate the founding of WYCO Health Link, a new community based, non-emergency medical transportation pilot program for Wyandotte County residents. Initiated by Wyandotte County CHIP (Community Health Improvement Plan), this program partners with local safety-net clinics to provide patients with free and reliable transportation to and from clinics regardless of income, insurance coverage or immigration status. Funding for this program is made possible through the American Rescue Plan Act and the KDOT Access, Innovation and Collaboration grant.

Launched in August of 2022, and still in its infancy, WYCO Health Link representatives meet twice a month with other clinics to applaud successful transport trips, discuss hurdles encountered in others, and brainstorm solutions to unique situations. Some of the most common situations are vision impairment, interpreter needs, and car seats for patients who must bring their small children with them.

Duchesne is an exemplary clinic, utilizing workflow strategies to capture all patients who need this service. It has the most trips of any clinic in Wyandotte County so far. This meaningful partnership with WYCO Health Link is one more way we can make healthcare accessible. This is one more way we can help heal our communities and alleviate barriers to care for our already struggling patients.
