The City of Columbia Public Relations, Media and Marketing Department has won an award of excellence in the 2020 Palmetto Awards. The team was recognized in the category of “communication for the web” for the Resilient Columbia microsite.

Volunteer to Help Make the City of Columbia
a Safer Place to Walk and Ride!
The City of Columbia is seeking volunteers to help conduct our routine Bicyclist & Pedestrian Counts throughout Columbia. By counting pedestrians and bicyclists, volunteers help to ensure that all of the City’s residents count: transit riders, pedestrians, and bicyclists are often not accounted for in traffic studies – the same traffic studies used to make important decisions about our City’s landscape.

PARK(ing) Day is an annual open-source global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public places.  The mission of PARK(ing) Day is to call attention to the need for more urban open space, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat … at least until the meter runs out! Miracle League of Columbia Fall Baseball League Registration Has Kicked off and Ends September 7

Registration for the Miracle League of Columbia’s Fall baseball season for children will end September 7, the Columbia Parks & Recreation Department announced.
The baseball program provides a safe and enjoyable team sport experience for young athletes with special needs and a budding sports prowess.  
There is no fee to participate. Games will be held at the Miracle League field at Owens Field Park, 1351 Jim Hamilton Blvd. League play will be held on Saturdays at 9 a.m., beginning Sept 18.

On Thursday, August 19, Mayor Steve Benjamin, City Council members, and the City’s Parks and Recreation Department celebrated the grand re-opening of the Ensor Keenan House, one of the City’s historic structures.

The City’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) is looking to create a strong human network to support continued growth of our street network for safe walking and biking for all ages and abilities throughout Columbia. BPAC is seeking individuals with experience or interest in education, fitness, health, traffic safety, or community activism to serve as Walk Bike Ambassadors that will empower, train, and lead members of their neighborhood and/or community. Individuals may participate in the program as representatives of neighborhoods/community groups or as active citizens with a personal interest. See More.
Columbia Water to Close Section of Blanding Street Beginning Sept. 1
The City of Columbia/Columbia Water will close all lanes of Blanding St. between Main Street and Assembly Street beginning Sept. 1 and continuing through Sept. 8 to conduct sewer line upgrades. The City urges its citizens to reroute accordingly. Columbia Water apologizes for any inconvenience that this may cause to our customers. We ask for your patience as we work to improve the infrastructure in your area.

HUD Secretary Marcia L. Fudge Joins Congressman James E. Clyburn During Visit to Columbia
On Monday, August 30, Secretary Marcia L. Fudge of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and Congressman James E. Clyburn met with Mayor Steve Benjamin and local officials at a Housing Roundtable discussion to highlight the importance of vaccinations and discuss housing-related issues in Columbia. This trip kicks off the Biden-Harris Administration’s tour to encourage vaccinations in five cities across the country. 
Secretary Fudge, Congressman Clyburn and Mayor Benjamin visited a local barbershop that also serves as a vaccination site and met with barbers, customers and community members to discuss the importance of being vaccinated. The Secretary, Congressman, and Mayor also toured an affordable housing site.

City’s Parks and Recreation Department Celebrated Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of Saluda River Greenway
On Monday, August 30, City Council members and the City’s Parks and Recreation Department officially announced and celebrated the grand opening of Saluda River Greenway, one of the City of Columbia’s latest amenities. This project has been a partnership between the City of Columbia, Richland County, the River Alliance, and the Boyd Foundation.

City of Columbia to Host #LoveColumbiaSC Photo Challenge
The #LoveColumbiaSC Challenge is a City initiative that encourages citizens of Columbia to submit photos via social media of the places they love in the City of Columbia. Citizens are tasked with submitting photos of their favorite places within City limits. The photo must be taken by the citizen who is entering the contest.
 
The City of Columbia Photo Challenge, #LoveColumbiaSC, began in 2014 as a way to increase community engagement, expand public knowledge of the City’s social media sites and increase the use of technology to interact with citizens. To enter the contest, you must tag the City of Columbia in your photo on the social media platform and use hashtag #LoveColumbiaSC to identify as a contest entry.
City to Observe Labor Day Holiday
The City of Columbia will observe Labor Day as a City Holiday.
 
The Solid Waste Division will run on its regular schedule for Monday, September 6, 2021.
 
City residents are encouraged to download the free “Columbia, SC Solid Waste” app for iPhone or Android for weekly collection reminders and holiday schedule changes. Residents can also sign up for other notification options online at http://columbiasc.net/solid-waste/recycling/waste-wizard.

The City of Columbia is accepting applications to fill several vacancies on the following boards and commissions.
 
Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee (A-TAX)
Seeking seven (7) applicants. Four (4) must be designated hospitality industry representatives, two (2) of which must be from the lodging sector; one (1) must be a cultural interest representative; two (2) may be At-Large businesspersons/citizens in the community.
The purpose of this committee is to review applications submitted for Accommodations Tax funding and make recommendations to Columbia City Council. Applicant must reside/work within City Limits. Term – 2 years.
 
Board of Zoning Appeals- (BOZA)
Seeking to fill two (2) vacancies.
The Board of Zoning Appeals is a quasi- judicial board that makes decisions regarding zoning issues. Cases are posted and advertised in accordance with Chapter 17, Article III, Division 3, Section 111 & 112 of the City Code of Ordinance and with title 30, Chapter 4 of the code of laws of South Carolina. purpose of the Citizens Advisory Committee is to make important recommendations for the use of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), Housing Opportunities for persons with Aids (HOPWA), and other federal grant programs as assigned. They advise the Mayor and council on the needs of neighborhoods, review amendments, and make appropriate comments on policies. Term – 4 years.
 
Citizens Advisory Committee for Community Development
Seeking to fill three (3) vacancies.
The purpose of the Citizens Advisory Committee is to make important recommendations for the use of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), Housing Opportunities for persons with Aids (HOPWA), and other federal grant programs as assigned. They advise the Mayor and council on the needs of
neighborhoods, review amendments, and make appropriate comments on policies. Term – 4 years.
 
Climate Protection Action Committee
Seeking to fill seven (7) non-voting vacancies and one (1) voting vacancy.
The Climate Protection Action Committee (CPAC) is a volunteer group whose mission is to develop and advocate effective strategies to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, adapt to climate change, conserve natural resources and otherwise protect the environment at a City level, while also fostering an improved quality of life for the citizens of the City of Columbia. The purpose of CPAC is to recommend and oversee the development and implementation of mission-based programs and projects within the City of Columbia. Click here for much more information about CPAC. Columbia Prepares Advisory Committee
Seeking to fill six (6) vacancies.
The purpose of the Columbia Prepares Advisory Committee is to provide increased transparency in the implementation of CDBG-MIT funds; inform the community at large and other stakeholders of mitigation projects and strategies; improve the community’s understanding of the importance of hazard mitigation activities and projects to the health and well-being of all residents; solicit and respond to public questions, comment and input on the City’s mitigation activities; serve as on on-going public forum to continuously inform Columbia’s CDBG-MIT project and programs. Columbia Tree and Appearance Commission (CTAC)
Seeking to fill four (4) vacancies; three At-Large members and one Architect or Engineer
The Columbia Tree and Appearance Commission has the following powers and duties: To review and recommend policies and ordinances affecting the planting, removal and preservation of trees on public and private property; provide advice on the allocation of resources and policies for the planting, care and removal of trees in the
City of Columbia; serve as an advisory body to the City Forestry and Beautification Superintendent in the administration of this article; review and make recommendations related to the City Forestry and Beautification Division’s annual work plan and any comprehensive urban forestry or reforestation plans; provide public education and advocacy on tree value, preservation and care; make recommendations to City Council on disbursements of the Columbia Landscape and Tree Fund; oversee the development and implementation of a master plan for the beautification of the City of Columbia; and advise the City and its boards and commissions regarding landscaping, tree planting, protection and removal. CTAC helps sponsor the annual Arbor Day celebration, Treasured Tree program and Columbia Choice Awards. Term- 3 years
 
Design Development Review Commission (DDRC)
Seeking to fill one (1) vacancy for an Architectural Historian.
Applicants must have experience as an architectural historian. The purpose of the Design/Development Review Commission (DDRC) is to review and approve work proposed within the City's historic districts, urban design areas, and upon designated landmarks.
Term – 3 years
 
Election Commission
Seeking to fill one (1) vacancy.
The Election Commission determines the eligibility of candidates seeking office; counts and verifies absentee ballots to ensure the integrity of the election process in accordance with state statute; conducts Protest Hearings and certifies the results of all municipal elections. To see other duties please read State Statute Sec.7 – Elections. Term- 6 years
 
Hospitality Tax (H-TAX)
Seeking to fill eleven (11) vacancies. Six (6) must be from the restaurant/catering industry and five (5) At-large businesspersons.
The purpose of this committee is to review applications for hospitality funding and make recommendations to Council for the disbursement of those funds. Term- 2 years
 
Midlands Authority for Conventions, Sports, and Tourism
Seeking to fill one (1) vacancy.
The mission of the Midlands Authority for Conventions Sports and Tourism includes: directing and managing the activities and mission of the Columbia Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau; Overseeing the development and operation of the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center under a long-term management agreement for the benefit of the Governmental Entities: City of Columbia, Lexington County and Richland County; Directing and managing the activities and mission of the Columbia Regional Sports Council; and Directing and managing the operation of the Columbia Regional Visitors Center. Term- 3 years
 
Transportation Penny Oversight Committee
Seeking to fill two (2) vacancies.
The Transportation Penny Oversight Committee will review, comment on, and provide recommendations on the Transportation Penny to Richland County Council. Transportation Penny Oversight Committee members will recommend any reordering of the prioritization (if applicable) of the projects list. Members will review the proposals for the Program Management Firm(s), and will provide feedback to Richland County Council and will provide feedback to Richland County Council regarding the race-and gender-neutral Small Local Business Enterprise program. They will also provide quarterly reports to each respective jurisdiction from which they are appointed. Term- 5 years

Virtual Mayor’s Walk Against Domestic Violence
The 2021 Mayor’s Walk Against Domestic Violence will be held virtually Saturday, October 9. Participants are asked to join in and show their support by going for a walk in their own neighborhoods, local parks, and other outdoor areas throughout Columbia.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and for the 15th year, Mayor Steve Benjamin and Councilwoman Tameika Isaac Devine are hosting the annual walk, which will be taking place virtually this year due to the global pandemic. Participants are encouraged to walk alone or with their family members (households). If someone chooses to walk with a group or with friends, they are urged to wear a mask and practice social distancing. By joining in and walking in parks and neighborhoods within the community, participants will help in raising awareness about the abuse and violence that is taking place in our community. The first 500 registrants will have the opportunity to pick up a registration packet and gift as well as a yard sign to be displayed at their homes, showing their support in taking steps against domestic violence.
