HPISD BOARD OF TRUSTEES UPDATE

At yesterday’s board meeting, trustees described this summer’s literacy work and how transformational it will be for students. The district’s literacy team, including two outside consultants, has been working long hours and interacting with district educators to prepare for big changes. Trustees shared that teachers have expressed excitement about the changes and the opportunities for continued professional development.

NEW K-8 ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS (ELA) INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

Board members feel that all materials they're considering align with the Science of Reading. However, there are differences between them, so parent and community member feedback is critically important. Due to copyright laws, reviewing the materials in person is most helpful.

  • View materials TODAY & TOMORROW anytime from 7:30am to 5pm in the William P. Clements Jr. Leadership Center at 6900 Douglas
  • Deadline to review materials in person: Thursday, June 16 at 5pm
  • Deadline to submit online feedback: Sunday, June 19 at 6pm

The literacy subcommittee will meet Monday to review the feedback and determine what materials they will recommend to the board for adoption. Later next week, the full board is expected to approve the recommendation so that materials can be ordered as soon as possible.

The HP Literacy Coalition is not officially endorsing any ELA instructional materials. However, if you would like more information regarding the differences between them, please reach out to any of the people listed below or send an email to hpliteracycoalition@gmail.com.
