Progress as Promised - Use Tax Project Update
Thanks to the voter approved 3/8-cent Use Tax that passed in April 2018, Liberty Parks & Rec (LPR), with input from community stakeholders, was able to make many improvements to neighborhood parks, the Liberty Community Center and City Park.
$3.5 million was dedicated to LPR projects, including:
- $2.1 million for full renovation of City Park to provide an inclusive playground and sprayground
- $700,000 on a new family locker room and weight room addition at the Liberty Community Center
- $800,000 on various projects at neighborhood parks.
LPR held a ribbon cutting and grand opening for the rejuvenated City Park on Nov. 4. Pictured above is Mayor Lyndell Brenton, Liberty Parks & Rec Foundation Chair, Jodi Capps and Liberty Park Board President Christopher Hand cutting the ribbon on City Park and taking the inaugural slide into the playground.
With the opening of City Park, LPR is nearing the completion of all the Use Tax projects. So far, more than 50 different projects have been completed that scale in size from water fountains to full playground replacements. Check out all the projects by clicking the button below (a few of these are featured on the right).

Overcoming Your Barriers to Exercise
November is National Diabetes Month, a time when communities across the country team up to bring attention to diabetes. The focus this year is on prediabetes and prevention. Exercise and healthy eating can help reverse or prevent a diagnosis. Here are a few tips to help overcome some barriers you may have to exercise:
I don't have time
- Make it part of your daily routine. Take the stairs or exercise while watching your favorite show.
I'm too tired
- Increasing your activity levels actually gives you more energy. Find a time when your energy is the highest.
I don't know what to do at the gym
- Utilize our personal trainers to help you get started, or take a class to learn new skills.
I don't have the motivation
- Make a plan and set realistic goals. Find someone to go with you for accountability.

70% of Americans believe that the “arts improve the image and identity” of their community.
-Americans Speak Out About The Arts, 2018
The sculpture exhibit on display now features nine original, three dimensional works of art displayed around the historic downtown Liberty area.
Each year, a piece is purchased and added to the City's permanent public art collection. Some have been installed in Liberty parks -- have you noticed them?
Thanks to our staff for their hard work on these beautiful additions to Liberty!

Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP)
Are you 55 and older and interested in serving your community in a way that suits your schedule, skills and interests?
Serve as an AmeriCorps Seniors volunteer in our RSVP program and let us connect you with meaningful and rewarding community volunteer experiences.
In April 2021, Liberty Parks & Rec (LPR) received an AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP grant from the AmeriCorps federal agency to support RSVP of Clay County. With this funding, LPR will leverage the skills and experience of older adults in Clay County to support Meals on Wheels, Evidence–Based Wellness Programs, Environmental Stewardship projects and more.
By volunteering with LPR, you can significantly impact where and how government funds are distributed, and help to strengthen the community and our volunteer efforts.

Astroturf's "GO BIG" Projects are at the Heart of the Sports Tourism Boom
|
|
|
The AstroTurf® “GO BIG” program has provided more than 250 fields for these mega sports complexes and has been center stage for thousands of events that have had tremendous economic impacts on their communities.
Families that travel to these sports destinations contribute much to the local economy in the way of spending on food, gas, lodging, shopping, entertainment, and taking advantage of everything that the area has to offer.
Capitol Federal® Sports Complex was the first public baseball/softball turf facility in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Already a popular venue for youth and adult leagues tournaments, the facility traditionally brings 200,000+ visitors to Liberty each year.

KC Wolf made an appearance at the Liberty Community Center (LCC) for the Huntington’s Disease Society of America Team Hope 5K Run/Walk back on Oct. 9. He took advantage of several of the amenities at the LCC to get warmed up for the race. He started off with some strength training, got his heart rate up with some cardio, made his way to the weight room and admired the pool waiting for the day he can come back with his swimsuit.
The LCC is a family-friendly place committed to providing fitness resources and recreational facilities to all members of the family. Monthly memberships are available starting at only $33.50 for an adult and we even have day passes to come try it out. Safe to say, KC Wolf approves!
