The Doctor Is In!

As I mentioned in my last newsletter, we started on a second lockdown in June and are still muddling through. We were fortunate to have Victoria come and stay during this time for a month and spend time with the children in the children’s home. It was fun for them.

We had a medical team join us in early July. They treated many of the impoverished people from the community that could otherwise not afford treatment and helped with some special situations that clinics in the village are often unable to address. One woman came with her baby who was having some serious issues with a heart murmur. With the country-wide restrictions in place we had to make sure that all had a mask, plenty of sanitizer for all, and good social distancing. We were successful in doing this by renting a tent for waiting in which all seats were put far

apart. In one day the two visiting doctors and Michael, our Clinic In-Charge, served 71 patients. All went very well and it was a day where much love and care was shown to the people who came. We give special thanks to the team for making this service possible.

Because the team was small, they were able to visit a few homes. One of the ladies was thrilled to meet her sponsored child in person for the first time. On another day we dedicated 3 of the 4 community wells that were dug in the previous few months by funds raised by the team for this good clean water.

Holmes Medical Clinic

Our Holmes Medical Clinic continues to serve our sponsored children as well as other impoverished families in the community that could otherwise not afford medical treatment or medicine. Most patients are treated for malaria, typhoid, flu and common colds as well as minor injuries, prenatal care and diabetes. We are able to acquire treatment that is beyond what we can offer in larger clinics and hospitals in larger towns with our Mercy Fund which has received generous donations from many of you.

The pandemic has brought many challenges as we had to work with new restrictions and requirements and kept Holmes Clinic busy. These challenges continue as we now endure a second period of country-wide lock down. We were fortunate not to have many cases of Covid-19 in our village during the first round, but we have not been as fortunate this time around with even some of our ministry staff contracting the virus. God has taken good care of us.

The clinic receives much of its funding from our sponsorship program for treatment provided to our sponsored children. You all have been an amazing help over the years to cover the remainder of our operational costs, including medicine and lab and medical supplies as well as wages for our medical staff. This allows us to treat community families that are not involved in our sponsorship program, but still have great need. We are in need of a boost for these funds at this time. On another note, the schools are all closed down. Even the government is working only part time. It has been difficult to get around. We use a travel and tour vehicle everywhere we go beyond the village as these are the only vehicles allowed outside of local areas.

In 2020 Genesis Nursery/Primary School had the third 7th grade class since we began. It was hard to get them finished, but they finished in April 2021. The results of the national exams they took have come out and Genesis students once again performed excellently. Out of the 26 students, 20 of them were in top grade – division I, and the other 6 were at the top of division II, which means they all did very well. Glory and praise to the Lord for this.
