Holiday Greetings from the Museum of Old Newbury!

Dear Friends:

As we enter into this holiday season and the , I'd like to take a moment to reflect.

This year has certainly been the most challenging of my museum career and despite our physical distances, we have come closer together in our ongoing efforts to serve our communities by offering opportunities to discover more about our history, art and culture.

We will continue to explore new territories with virtual programs and events and new ways to communicate with all of you.

In early 2021, our major electrical project will be completed, and we will focus our energies on preparing the Cushing House for reopening in the late spring.

Mere words cannot express the sincere gratitude the Board of Directors, staff members and I have for all of you who work with us to keep the legacy of Old Newbury alive. Thank you for your support.

This comes with heartfelt wishes for peace, health and happiness during this holiday season.

Executive Director

Puzzle Me This (& a Poem):

Creator, open our hearts to peace

Creator, open our hearts
to peace and healing between all people.

Creator, open our hearts
to provide and protect for all children of the earth.

Creator, open our hearts
to respect for the earth, and all the gifts of the earth.

Creator, open our hearts
to end exclusion, violence, and fear among all.

Thank-you for the gifts of this day and every day.

There is Still Time to Bid: Auction of Merman Tree Topper runs until Noon, January 1, 2021

A gilded steel replica of the Museum of Old Newbury Merman, featured high atop the Custom House Maritime Museum's "Maritime Tree," is up for auction.

Click here to place your bid. Bidding ends at noon on January 1, 2021.

The hand cut and crafted Triton with Horn, also known as the Merman, is similar to the one on the Museum of Old Newbury's sign, made by museum Co-President, David Mack. It can be used as a tree topper or garden ornament. The piece measures 15"H x 18"W and is mounted on a 3' steel pole.
Something is Always Cooking at the Museum

Betsy Ware's spice blend will make you nuts for this tasty treat! We are pretty confident you might want to double and possibly triple this gem.

Spiced Party Nuts

1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon curry powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 cups shelled whole almonds or pecans (halved)
1 tablespoon coarse or kosher salt (optional)
Garlic salt (optional)

Preheat oven to 325ºF. Mix cumin, chili powder, curry powder, garlic salt, cayenne pepper, ginger and cinnamon in a bowl and set aside. Heat oil in a skillet over low heat. Add spice mixture and stir well, 3 to 4 minutes. Place nuts in a mixing bowl. Add spice mixture and toss well.

Spread nuts in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake for 15 minutes, shaking the pan once or twice during cooking. Remove baking sheet from the oven and using a rubber spatula, toss the nuts with any spices and oil that have accumulated on the bottom of the pan. Sprinkle with the coarse salt and a bit more garlic salt, if desired. Let rest for 2 hours in a cool place. Store in airtight jars. Makes 2 cups.

In this virtual event, best-selling author Eric Jay Dolin will take us through the Golden Age of American piracy when lawless pirates plied the coastal waters of North America and beyond.

Legendary pirates such as Blackbeard, the ill-fated Captain Kidd, and sadistic Edward Low, who delighted in torturing his prey, will all be discussed.
