Platte County Federated Women's Democratic Club
The Women’s Club met on February 13th at the Platte County Resource Center. Our guest speaker was Carla Dods President of the Board of Directors for the Platte County Land Trust. Carla began by acknowledging that Pauli Kendrick, who passed away last year, a former President of the PCFWD and longtime member of the PCDCC, was one of the 1998 founders of the Platte County Land Trust.

The Platte County Land Trust is a 501(c)(3)non-profit dedicated to conserving and protecting natural resources, land and open spaces. It is an all-volunteer conservation origination partnering with voluntary land owners to protect wildlife habitat, family farms, forests, recreation areas and trails. For additional information go to: https://plattelandtrust.org/.

At the business meeting that followed the presentation included: 1. Plans for the Central Committee’s major fundraiser “Music and Mimosas” were discussed. 2. The Fund Raising Committee provided a brief report and led the discussion on other fund raising possibilities for the year ahead. We are looking for maximum benefit with a minimum of administrative input. 3. Chair, Rita McGuire asked for volunteers for a Nominating Committee to develop a new slate of club officers for the next two years. Volunteers for the Nominating Committee are: Elisa Neilson, Helen Weigman and Lee Karbaumer. 4. Sharen Hunt announced that she will invite all candidates for the Platte County Health Department Board to participate in the March 13thmeeting of the Women’s Club. Prior to the Corvid-19 pandemic, Board membership was not controversial. With the politicization of health care policy that came with federal funding for pandemic management, heath care administration and board membership have become more significant and contentions. Please join us for this important discussion.
Platte Country Democratic Central Committee

Chair, Meredith Peace announced that additional volunteers were needed to sign up with Sign Up Genius.

Speakers at the event will be Jess Piper, Host Dirt Road Democrat Podcast; Keynote Speaker, Lucas Kunce, Candidate for U.S. Senate.

Two new members of the Central Committee were approved: Tyler McCoy, alternate and Marc Slavin, District 12-1.
Northland Democratic Club
The Northland Democratic Club met at the ACA Club on February 22nd.

There are currently three dozen candidates running for the open city council seats, with seven current council members seeking re-election in the April 4th Primary Election.. Candidates running for “in-district” seats are elected by the voters living in that district. All Kansas City voters will also vote for candidates in each of the six “at-large” seats. This is a non-partisan election so the two candidates with the most votes in each race will move on the General Election on June 20. Voters on June 20 will cast one vote for Mayor, one vote for their “in-district” representative and one vote in each of the six “at-large” districts.

This year many of the at-large candidates have requested an opportunity to speak at the NDC meetings. President John DeFoor introduced the following candidates for Kansas City, Missouri City Council providing each with an opportunity to make a brief presentation and answer questions. Each of the candidates has a website that summarizes their issues and positions. The candidates attending were: Justin Short, candidate for the 4th District at-large https://www.justinshortforkc.com/; Melissa Patterson Hazley, candidate for the 3rd District at-large https://www.mph4kcmo.com/; Lindsay French, candidate for the 2nd District at-large https://www.lindsayfrenchforkc.com/; Crispin Rea, candidate for the 4th District at-large; Darrell Curls, candidate for the 5th District at-large https://www.votecurlsforcouncil.com/about-5; Michael Kelly candidate for the 5th District at-large https://www.kelleyforkc.com/. The Northland Democratic Club cannot endorse contested seats until after the primary but we do our best to provide everyone with an opportunity to speak. NPR provides a guide to the April election here.

Laura Wagner, candidate for the North Kansas City School Board and Cody McElroy, candidate for the Gladstone City Council also gave brief presentations.
