While this week is filled with Halloween festivities, the Board of County Commissioners (BCC) held another special meeting on COVID-19. As we face the economic impacts of COVID-19, we continue to meet regularly to discuss the effects of the pandemic on our community and what we can do to provide relief to the residents, employers, and the small businesses of Miami-Dade.

Since March, the District 5 team has distributed over 41,000 fresh food boxes. As many residents in our community are still struggling to make ends meet and put food on the table, we remain committed to our weekly, drive-thru food distribution in partnership with Miami-Dade Parks and Feeding South Florida. Today, we held a special “Spooktacular Haunted Forest” – a spooky twist to our food distribution event.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN DISTRICT 5 |

Earlier this week, Commissioner Higgins was part of an Affordable Housing panel with the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, where she got the opportunity to engage in an in-depth discussion with our County’s housing experts on critical housing needs in our community and programs available to residents throughout COVID-19. From assistance to renters and landlords as well as forbearance for mortgages, they discussed existing programs and possible solutions that can be implemented to help Miami-Dade residents. Preserving Affordable Housing |

This week, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the renovation of Robert King High Towers in the heart of Little Havana - one of the biggest Rental Assistance Demonstration program (RAD) projects in the history of Miami-Dade County!
The project includes the renovation of 315 units and the community center, all while preserving the historic nature of the building. This marks a step forward in the County's commitment to giving senior residents a clean, safe, and affordable place to live, that feels like a real home.
Thanks to the collaborative effort of Miami-Dade County Department of Public Housing and Community Development Director, Michael Liu, Mayor Carlos Gimenez, and the Related Urban Development Group, this was made possible!

Flamingo Park Slow Streets Walk Through |
|
Join Commissioner Higgins, Miami Beach Commissioner Mark Samuelian, City of Miami Beach Transportation officials, the Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works, next Monday, November 2 at 5:00 pm, for a walkthrough of the newly-launched Slow Streets Pilot Program in the Flamingo Park neighborhood. The route will start at the Flamingo Park entrance on 13th Street and Meridian Avenue. Come see how these changes help make the neighborhood safer for pedestrians and bicyclists! Don’t forget your masks!

NW 20th Street between NW 37th and NW 27th is an important connector for both residents of Grapeland and the marine industry. Commissioner Higgins worked with the Department of Transportation and Public Works to ensure that the street got new paving and striping. The project is almost complete - and is only pending the installation of new ADA compliant sidewalk ramps and curbs.

CARES ACT FUNDING IN THE HANDS OF OUR SMALL BUSINESSES |

Commissioner Higgins and the Administration have worked around the clock to put federal relief dollars to work. To date, Miami-Dade County has launched 15 programs, ranging from emergency rental relief, to basic needs grants, to professional development for hotel workers, and beyond.

A principios de esta semana, la Comisionada Higgins formó parte de un panel de Viviendas Asequibles con la Cámara de Comercio del Gran Miami, donde tuvo la oportunidad de participar en una discusión con los expertos en vivienda de nuestro Condado sobre las necesidades críticas de vivienda en nuestra comunidad y los programas de COVID-19 disponibles para residentes. Desde la asistencia a inquilinos y propietarios, así como la indulgencia de hipotecas, hablaron sobre los programas existentes y las posibles soluciones que se pueden implementar para ayudar a los residentes de Miami-Dade. Esta semana, se llevó a cabo una ceremonia de inauguración para la renovación de Robert King High Towers en el corazón de la Pequeña Habana, ¡uno de los proyectos más grandes del Programa de Demostración de Asistencia para el Alquiler (RAD or sus siglas en inglés) en la historia del Condado Miami-Dade!
El proyecto incluye la renovación de 315 unidades y el centro comunitario, todo mientras se preserva la naturaleza histórica del edificio. Esto marca un paso adelante en el compromiso del Condado de brindarles a residentes mayores un lugar limpio, seguro y asequible para vivir, que se siente como un verdadero hogar.
Gracias al esfuerzo colaborativo del Director del Departamento de Vivienda Pública y Desarrollo Comunitario del Departamento del Condado Miami-Dade, Michael Liu, el Alcalde Carlos Giménez y the Related Urban Development Group, ¡esto fue posible!

Recorrido por las Calles Lentas de Flamingo Park |

Únase a la Comisionada Higgins, al Comisionado de Miami Beach Mark Samuelian, a los funcionarios de Transporte de la Ciudad de Miami Beach, y al Departamento de Transporte y Obras Públicas del Condado Miami-Dade, el próximo lunes 2 de noviembre a las 5 pm, para un recorrido por el Programa Piloto recientemente lanzado de calles lentas en el vecindario de Flamingo Park. La ruta comenzará en la entrada de Flamingo Park en la 13 calle y Meridian Avenue. ¡Venga a ver cómo estos cambios ayudan a que el vecindario sea más seguro para los peatones y ciclistas! ¡No olviden sus máscaras!

LA FINANCIACIÓN DE LA LEY CARES EN LAS MANOS DE NUESTROS PEQUEÑOS NEGOCIOS |

La Comisionada Higgins y la Administración han trabajado día y noche para poner a trabajar los dólares de ayuda federal. Hasta la fecha, el Condado Miami-Dade ha puesto en marcha 15 programas, que van desde ayuda de emergencia para alquileres hasta subvenciones para necesidades básicas, desarrollo profesional para trabajadores de hoteles y más.
