WELCOME - LETTER FROM THE BABC PRESIDENT
|
|
 |
Dear Friends of the BABC,
Can you believe we are only 2 months away from 2021? I am sure you are all looking forward to it as much as I am together with the hope that it can only be an improvement on 2020. No doubt we will still need to be patient and demonstrate a determination to continue to battle the pandemic but I am confident that within the first half of 2021 we will start to win that battle. Talking of battles, apparently there is one scheduled for tomorrow…..
The past few weeks the BABC has been busy relocating to its new offices at BABC Premier Member Werqwise's collaborative workspace at 149 New Montgomery St. We must thank fellow BABC Premier Member Ace Relocation for providing a seamless and efficient relocation. It's moments like these that reinforce the strength of the BABC Community and we are hugely grateful to all of you who are a part of it. We hope to welcome the BABC Community to our new home at Werqwise when in-person events start up again next year. For now though, Werqwise is providing the safest environment for us to continue our operations and we are excited to be part of the Werqwise family. Thank you Alan!
Pre-covid, Werqwise was the home of our monthly Happy Hour and as many of you will be aware, we have taken our Happy Hours virtual. Last month we opened up registration to everyone, in partnership with BBS. This was a great opportunity to align with our community partner and share the latest from both organizations with our guests. Our partnership with the BBS continues as we host our 2nd BABC Young Professional Pub Quiz/Trivia night. This was a hit during the summer and we would love to see those that took part last time make another appearance and also face new contenders. So get your team together for another fun British-American themed trivia night!
It’s a jam-packed start to the new month. 2 nights before the Virtual Pub Quiz, we host the November Virtual Happy Hour (11/10) where we will be joined by Senior Vice President - West Coast at Invest Northern Ireland, Mark Johnston, for a Lightning Talk discussing all things Northern Ireland, recapping the past decade (HBO, Cyber Security and all in between) and what they are excited about as we move into a new decade! Continuing the theme of looking to the future, a week later (11/16), we host Global Words of Wisdom on … Employees Working From Anywhere. In the wake of COVID-19 Part 1 of a Part 2 series, will discuss the international tax, HR, employment law, and payroll implications of having a workforce ‘working from anywhere’. With thanks to our sponsors Cooley, Fitzgerald & Law, and Global Mobility Tax.
I am also delighted to announce that while we are unable to host our 57th annual Christmas Lunch in person at The Fairmont this year we are going to go ahead and host a virtual Christmas celebration and fundraiser on Friday 11th December. There will be plenty to enjoy and we are excited to share more details with you when we officially launch the event in the next couple of weeks.
We hope to see many of you at these upcoming events!
Whichever way you are voting tomorrow and whatever the result I am sure we can all agree that finding a way to return to the ‘United’ States of America has got to be our collective focus over the next four years.

ADOPT A FAMILY AT RAPHAEL HOUSE
|
|
|
Our annual Adopt-A-Family program helps families at risk of or currently experiencing homelessness enjoy a holiday season full of warmth and joy. The COVID-19 crisis has presented many challenges for families this year, including reduced work hours and layoffs. Your generous contributions enable families to enjoy the holidays while maintaining financial stability to afford other necessities like groceries or healthcare.
Note: Due to COVID-19 safety concerns, we are not able to accept physical gifts this holiday season and instead are asking donors to provide gift cards for families. We strongly encourage donors to provide electronic (email) gift cards as they are the safest way of passing your gift on to families.

Reaching a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (U.S.) is one of the most ambitious and significant political projects in the transatlantic corridor.

The Covid-19 pandemic has led to the most challenging environment any of us have experienced in modern times. And while businesses recover, professional accountants are faced with new and intense ethical dilemmas, which require them to exercise all their professional expertise and moral judgement.

EU PREPARES FOR POTENTIAL RETALIATORY TARIFFS TARGETING TRANSATLANTIC TRADE
On October 13, 2020, the World Trade Organization (WTO) issued its latest ruling in the longstanding Boeing-Airbus dispute, granting the EU the authority to impose compensatory tariffs totaling up to US$4 billion on US goods in response to allegedly illegal subsidies provided to Boeing. Once again, US exporting companies find themselves in the crosshairs, as EU officials
prepare for potential retaliatory tariffs targeting transatlantic trade.

FINAL PUSH ON BREXIT
Not everyone realizes that, in a formal sense, Brexit has actually already happened – with effect from midnight (European time) on 31 January 2020 the UK ceased to be a member of the European Union. However you will be forgiven for not noticing much difference because with immediate effect the UK entered into the transition period which runs until 11 pm UK time on 31 December 2020. The UK and EU continue to negotiate an agreement on the future trading relationship, but time is running short

REFLECTING ON THE LAST 28 YEARS AND WELCOMING THE NEW MD!
We are very excited to announce that F&L (soon to be rebranded ZEDRA following successful completion of the recent acquisition) has named Kiki Stannard as its London Managing Director. The transaction means an entirely new corporate structure and Gabriel Parrish, who is taking the opportunity to retire after 23 years at F&L, will be the final Senior Partner in the firm’s 28 year history.
|
|
F&L JOINS ZEDRA
There will be some exciting changes happening at F&L in the next few months.
When ZEDRA decided to enter the global expansion marketplace they were looking for a partner that shared their values. It soon became clear that F&L is a perfect fit.
