All-Stars Newsletter - August 2021

Aloha ASAS Hawaii ʻOhana,

We'd like to invite you to join us for our 11th All-Star Affair: Shine Bright Like an All-Star, a celebration of our students’ successes, as well as an opportunity to encourage and support their hopes for the future.

We're especially excited as this year's event will be held virtually and the gala program will premiere on our website on Wednesday, September 1 at 6:30 pm.

Thanks to the support of our generous sponsors, there is no cost for our families and supporters to view our gala program online. Remember to bookmark the Virtual Gala Website and join us next week from the comfort of your home.

If you'd like to support the event, consider making a donation in honor of our students who continue to face new challenges every day.

ASAS Hawaii will continue to provide a safe and supportive place for them to grow and thrive. We hope you'll consider supporting us in our mission to help students succeed in school and life!

Mahalo to The Garden Club of Honolulu

Mahalo to the Garden Club of Honolulu for their generous donation of $18,000. Funds helped to support a "Garden to Table" program where students learned how to cook a delicious and healthy dish during programs and then were able to take home a box of groceries and cooking with their families at home.

Program Highlights

Helping To Combat Learning Loss

Did you know that in addition to fun enrichment activities, ASAS provides our students academic support by offering daily homework help? This summer we also introduced a new evidence-based curriculum from BellXcel to help students strengthen their skills in language arts and math.

Marshallese Culture Workshops

The Marshallese Community Organization of Hawai’i (MCOH) partnered with ASAS to bring a new Marshallese Cultural Class to our students. The program introduced students to the cultural practices, crafts, art and stories of the Marshall islands in a fun and interactive way, as a means to encourage cultural understanding and inclusivity. You can read more about the program on Civil Beat.

CampReady: High School Readiness

ASAS held a virtual camp this summer, CampReady, for outgoing 8th grade students from O'ahu and Hawai'i Island. As part of the We Are Ready Initiative, students learned about the skills they would need to be successful in high school. Students participated in various workshops including topics like time management, learning styles and high school graduation requirements. ASAS alumni also returned to share their mana'o and personal experiences about the transition to high school with our students.
