Mobilizing Higher Education & Workforce Development for the Rapid Re-Employment of Canadians

The COVID-19 crisis has derailed the careers of millions of Canadians. To support them, workforce leaders, and policy and decision makers need to mobilize education and training systems in some key ways – starting with robust labour market information and laying the foundation for a national system of lifelong learning.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a cataclysm in the labour market, but also opens a policy and funding window to develop new solutions and bring the higher education and workforce-development systems together. Rapid advances in technology, labour market analysis, research and policy-making offer further promise.

The Public Policy Forum have developed four pillars to increase the rapid re-employment of Canadians:

  • Develop labour market intelligence to support demand-driven rapid re-employment interventions
  • Invest in and spur the creation of rapid response programs for re-employment
  • Increase financial support to working-age learners to ensure access to employment and training
  • Increase support for employment and career development services geared to workers experiencing pre-existing and pandemic-related barriers

McMaster University Mentorship Program
It Takes a Community, But it Starts With You

Connecting with people and investing in relationships is one of the best ways to explore what emerging talent has to offer. Building social capital through formal mentoring programs provides you with the opportunity to develop leadership skills and give back to your community and industry.

The Student Success Centre is offering 3 formal mentoring programs this year whereby you will have the opportunity to connect and provide guidance to undergraduate students who are interested in select careers or industries.

Programs include:
  • Communications Industry
  • MentorMatch (Health Sciences Focus)
  • Women in Leadership

Programs run from October to March. Choose your program, time commitment and number of mentees with whom you would like to be partnered on the registration form below. All connections will be happening in a virtual capacity on the platform of your choosing.

The She-covery Project: Confronting the Gendered Economic Impacts of COVID-19 in Ontario

The COVID-19 crisis is having a disproportionate economic impact on women, with women’s labour participation rate falling to its lowest in 30 years. Existing systemic inequalities have been further exacerbated by recent shut-down measures, resulting in what some economists are calling a “she-cession,” as more women have lost their jobs and fewer women than men are re-gaining employment. As schools begin to reopen, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce releases its latest report, The She-Covery Project: Confronting the Gendered Economic Impacts of COVID-19 in Ontario. This brief lays out a path to Ontario’s “she-covery” by offering practical recommendations to confront both immediate and longer-term challenges.
