Garces Memorial High School is pleased to announce the 2023 football schedule.
The Rams will open on Thursday, Aug. 17 at Lamonica Stadium against Clovis High, in a rematch of the Central Section Division I playoff opener last fall.
Garces will then play three consecutive non-league home games against Lancaster-Paraclete (Friday, Aug. 25), Moorpark (Friday, Sept. 1) and Thousand Oaks (Saturday, Sept. 9) before heading on the road to play Porterville-Monache at Porterville-Granite Hills on Saturday, Sept. 16 to complete the non-league schedule.
A change to the schedule this fall is no San Joaquin Memorial due to scheduling conflict between the programs this season. The Holy Bowl will resume at SJM in 2024 and at Sam Tobias Field in 2025. “While we are disappointed that we could not resolve a scheduling conflict with our brother in Christ this season, we are happy that the Holy Bowl will return in 2024,” Garces Memorial athletic director Gino Lacava said. “We want nothing more than to continue the tradition, and will do so once again after this one-year hiatus.”
Garces, coming off a second consecutive D-I playoff appearance, will open up River League play at Liberty on Sept. 29 and home against Frontier on Oct. 6 before heading to Bakersfield Christian on Oct. 13 for our non-league crossover game.
Senior night will be on Oct. 20 against Centennial with the regular season finale on Oct. 27 at Stockdale.
“We are really excited about the schedule for this fall and our boys are ready to go,” Garces fifth-year head coach Paul Golla said.

While at Cal State Bakersfield, Everingham produced 11 NCAA Division II national champions while also earning NCAA D-II Diving Coach of the Year five times. “Coach Everingham is the biggest name in diving around Bakersfield, hands down,” Garces Memorial athletic director Gino Lacava said. “We are so thrilled he is on campus coaching our divers to their best abilities.”

Sports Update
Provided by Trevor Horn, Sports Information Director
With rain all day today, many events for Garces Athletics were pushed to earlier in the week to avoid cancellations. Thankfully many of our spring sports were able to compete. And the Rams stepped up to the challenge on Thursday in track and field, swimming, and boys tennis.
Baseball
Under the lights on Monday, the bats heated up for the Rams in an 11-1 win over Golden Valley in non-league action. Jason Smith and Paul Pacheco both had three hits while Andrew Witt drove in three runs in the victory. On the mound, Pacheco struck out eight in five innings of work as Griffin Garcia came in and tossed two perfect innings as the Rams improve to 4-3 and are on the road Wednesday at Wasco.
Boys Golf
Aidan Sorci led the way with a 1-under-71 for a third-place finish overall as an individual as the Rams finished sixth overall of the 20 teams at the Mustang Invitational on Monday at Sundale Country Club. The Rams are back in action on Tuesday in the inaugural GMHS Match Play at Bakersfield Country Club beginning at 9 a.m.
Softball
The Rams opened the season at home on Tuesday against Taft. Garces got off to a hot start as Lexi Marquez had two hits and drove in three runs in a 5-4 victory in the first game of the doubleheader against the Wildcats. In the second game, Garces fell 7-1, but Ryleigh Garcia hit a solo home run for the Rams. Garces was set to play in the opening day of the BHS Tournament at Mesa Marin, but it has been canceled due to the rain. Tournament officials are hopeful to get games in on Saturday if the weather improves.
Swim and Dive
Last Saturday was a big day for the Garces swim team at the Bronco Class Meet at Clovis North. Charlie Potter was named the top freshman boys swimmer, while Jett Kalmikovs and Kate McCarthy both were named second in the freshman class at the meet. Gianna Garcia placed fifth in the senior girls class. Three meet records were broken as Potter broke the freshman boys records in the 200 freestyle (1:48.90) and the boys 200 individual medley (2:05.26) and Abby Schechter broke the girls 200IM in 2:20.44. Other first-place finishes at Clovis North were: Schechter (senior girls 200IM), McCarthy (frosh girls 100 fly), Potter (frosh boys 500), McCarthy (frosh girls 500), and Johnny Mendiburu (junior boys 500). The Rams hosted Tehachapi on Thursday with a clean sweep as the varsity boys won 121-46, varsity girls won 96-74, and JV girls won.
Boys Tennis
Tough start for the boys tennis team in River League action. The Rams won two of the three doubles matches at home against Liberty on Wednesday but fell 6-3. And due to the rain today, the road match against Frontier was moved up to Thursday, but still halted due to weather. After singles action, the Rams trail 4-2. The doubles matches will be made up at a later date to be determined.
Track and Field
Ian Harrison led the way once again for the track and field team at the Kern Invitational at Liberty on Thursday. Harrison finished in third in the boys 100-meters in 11.40 seconds, a personal best for the junior. Harrison also finished third in the 200 (23.21), just ahead of senior Juju Smith, who finished fifth in 24.19. Junior Lola Rebuck also placed top three in the girls 200 in a season-best time of 28.61 seconds. Freshman Jules Strurzyna took second in his heat and 17th overall in the boys 1,600 in 5:08.13.

Garces Gala Faculty Highlight Video
This year's Fund-A-Need at the Garces Gala was in support of the dedicated and hard-working teachers at Garces. Every dollar raised will go to a restricted account that will provide a more substantial salary increase for our faculty members for the upcoming school year. If you missed the Gala but would like to contribute in support of our teachers, please contact Ms. Tonya Abbott.
What an incredible night! Thank you to everyone who made this year's Gala a tremendous success. A special thank you to the 2023 Gala Co-Chairs, Ingrid (Ceballos) Lake, and Mia (Franconi) Selvidge for your volunteer leadership. Ingrid and Mia assembled a top-notch committee of volunteers who stepped up to ensure a beautiful evening for our attendees. Thank you, Melissa Alsop and Sofie Zimmerman - Decor, Stephanie (Campbell) Napier - Dinner, Teresa (Ramos) Alvarez -Catalog, Kimberly (Sturgess) Weimer - Invitations, Andrea Weishaar - Silent Auction, Tami (Clark) Opie - Bank, Sylvia Sala - Sponsorships, and the dozens of volunteers who helped with set up, worked the event, and show up early Sunday to help clean up after a great party. Thank you to the FFA leadership team, the Garces mascots and their escort (you know who you are) for greeting our guests and "encouraging" them to buy those flashing rings.
Our early projections show we should net close to $200,000. We are able to celebrate this success because of the generous support from our many event sponsors, vendors, auction donors, and attendees. If you happen to run into any of those listed below, please let them know how much they are appreciated.
Last but certainly not least, I want to thank everyone who has been a part of the Gala during my time as your staff partner. From my first Gala in 1997 to my final Gala in 2023, you all have impressed me with your commitment to Catholic education, our students, and this wonderful school we call Garces Memorial. Thank you for the incredible memories.
