CJ Teacher a state finalist
Rachel Hensley in running for Missouri Teacher of the Year 2022

Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has announced that Carl Junction Teacher Rachel Hensley is one of seven finalists for Missouri State Teacher of the Year.

Hensley, a sixth through eighth-grade teacher, was named the Carl Junction District Teacher of the Year in April, a Southwest Regional Teacher of the Year in June, a State Semi-finalist in August, and now a State Finalist for Missouri Teacher of the Year.
The seven finalists from throughout the state will interview this week with the State Teacher of the Year being announced on October 19.

Mrs. Hensley has a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Missouri Southern State University. Rachel Field Hensley is a 1995 graduate of Carl Junction High School.

A committee comprised of teachers, business leaders, and education organization officials will choose the Missouri Teacher of the Year following interviews with each finalist on Wednesday, September 8. The winner, finalists, semi-finalists, and Regional Teachers of the Year will be honored during a recognition event on October 19. The new Missouri Teacher of the Year will serve as the state’s nominee for the 2022 National Teacher of the Year.

“Over 70,000 public school educators across our state work hard every day to make an impact on the lives of Missouri students,” said Commissioner of Education Margie Vandeven. “Taking time to honor the top educators across our state through the Teacher of the Year program is important, as we are continually striving to elevate the teaching profession and emphasize the significance of the work they do.”

The Missouri Teacher of the Year program recognizes the efforts of effective teachers, working tirelessly to provide a high-quality education to their students. Darrion Cockrell (a.k.a. Mr. DC), a physical education teacher from Crestwood Elementary School (Lindbergh Schools), is the current Missouri Teacher of the Year.

MAP Scores sent home with students
Students who took the MAP (Missouri Assessment Program) tests last spring in Carl Junction received their individual student reports this week. The district-level reports will be released by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education this coming week.

The Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) Grade-Level Assessments evaluate students’ progress toward the Missouri Learning Standards.  The Missouri Learning Standards define the knowledge and skills students need in each grade level and course for success in college, other post-secondary training, and careers. These expectations are aligned to the Show-Me Standards, which define what all Missouri high school graduates should know and be able to do. You can find more information about the standards at https://dese.mo.gov/college-career-readiness/curriculum/mls-for-parents.

Grade-Level Assessments provide important information that contributes to decisions concerning individual students, groups of students, and educational programs.
Students in Grades 3 through 8 are administered assessments in English Language Arts and Mathematics. Those in Grades 5 and 8 also take Science assessments.
Bright Futures Update
Special thanks to our community and faith-based connection Christ's Church of Oronogo, they collected and donated lots of food to help us kick off the Bright Futures' Weekend Food Pack Program.
Bright Futures Coordinator Jeni Driskill helps Allison Stump and her son, Jesse, unload the generous donations from CCO.

This is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month
It is not something that we like to think about but according to the American Childhood Cancer Organization, 1 in 285 children in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer before their 20th birthday.

Several Carl Junction students are either battling cancer or have fought the battle during their time here at school. On September 24, Carl Junction Schools will #GoGold in support of all children and their families fighting the cancer battle. Join us in wearing gold instead of our normal red and white on Friday, September 24!

In addition, CJ Senior and Cancer Survivor Ellie Lawson is hosting a marrow donor registry drive at the Carl Junction vs. Webb City football game on September 24. See the details below.
