Justice and Outreach Council

Monthly Digest

March 2023

Welcome to the Justice and Outreach Council (JOC)'s monthly newsletter.

A place to find all the happenings of this active ministry at Trinity.

This month's digest is dedicated to

Kathryn Nelle Campbell Dean

1947-2023

Kathryn Dean joined JOC in September of 2018. She was the first editor of our monthly digest newsletter. Kathryn recruited people monthly to share their stories of volunteerism. Her dedicated involvement in our community helped guide what stories and organizations were featured. A few of her favorite were CLUE, The Freedom to Choose Project, Word of Life, SBACT, and Planned Parenthood. Kathryn was a very valuable member of JOC with personal involvement in the many organizations of our community focused on meeting the needs of others. We will miss her generous spirit and her sense of humor.

Kathryn passed away peacefully at home on February 15, in the company of her husband Michael and family. A service celebrating her remarkable life will be held at Trinity on April 15. Michael and Kathryn’s family have greatly appreciated the cards, letters and prayers from their beloved Trinity community. Please keep Michael in your thoughts and prayers as he continues in his life without Kathryn in the days and months to come.

The Sonder, a Documentary about Homelessness in Santa Barbara

In November 2022, Jeff Shaffer, our colleague serving those without homes and co-founder of SBACT, led an early morning State Street walk to acquaint us with the needs of our neighbors and created this documentary. In just 22 minutes, it captures solutions to homelessness in SB. We at JOC urge you to take a reality check on our community needs and watch this revealing documentary.

Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD)

Help with Earthquake Relief Efforts

ERD's critical relief work in the aftermath of the 7.8-magnitude earthquake continues in Syria and Turkey. Working through the Middle East Council of Churches and other local organizations, the ACT Alliance is sheltering 10,000 families in open-air or structurally sound facilities; providing survivors with hot meals, blankets, medicine and trauma support; supplying body bags and other necessities to hospitals; and helping children return to school to provide more stability.

The Anglican Church in Aleppo is sheltering another 1,000 people and providing similar support. Donate to Episcopal Relief and Development to help with these relief efforts.

Storyteller Children's Center

9th Annual Lunch

Join us on Thursday, April 13, from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm at the Santa Barbara Woman’s Club (Rockwood) for an inspirational afternoon to learn about Storyteller’s mission and hear how our trauma-informed model changes the lives of our community’s most vulnerable children. To RSVP or learn more about this event, contact melissa@storytellercenter.org or 805.730.0155.

Celebrate and Support Justice

Look for the blue celebration envelopes in the pews!

CELEBRATE!...a birthday, an anniversary, a special event of any sort for which you are thankful.

Turn your “celebration” into a donation to the Justice and Outreach Council. We will use these funds to provide comfort and safety to those in need—food, education for children, assistance to immigrants—any of our neighbors needing support . . . so they can celebrate. Together, these gifts make possible our community of welcome, reconciliation and service.

The Justice and Outreach Council (JOC) continues its important work in our community and beyond. Funding for the JOC comes from your pledges and Celebration offerings. The JOC’s funding is part of our annual operating budget where five percent (5%) of all pledges received during the year is put in the JOC account. As pledge income has remained steady this year, these funds continue to be set aside for justice work.

There are two ways you can continue to celebrate and support our justice work in addition to your pledges both now and in the future. You can send in a check made out to Trinity and simply note “Justice” in the memo line and provide the names of the persons or occasion you want to celebrate. You can also donate via Trinity’s PayPal account, select "Justice Fund" and under “special instructions” provide the names of the persons or occasion you want to celebrate.

Thank you for supporting our justice work through your pledges, donations, prayers, and most of all, the work you do in your lives to make this a more loving, peaceful, and just world.

Land Acknowledgement

We honor and acknowledge the Chumash people, the traditional custodians of this land, and pay our respects to the Chumash elders, past, present, and future, who call this land on which we sit their home. We appreciate their wisdom, their culture, and their presence among us today as the host people of this land. We lament the injustices done to the original inhabitants and the injustices done to this land in the centuries since. We seek the courage and wisdom to heal the wounds of the past and build a better future together, in deep solidarity.
