MEMORIAL SCHOOL
ANNOUNCEMENT
October 11, 2021
Greetings Memorial School Families,

I hope everyone has enjoyed the long weekend and had an opportunity to experience some of the gifts that New England offers at this time of the year. Fall fairs, pumpkin carving, apple picking, leaf peeping, and many other activities help to make me grateful to live in this part of the country.
Before School Fitness Club

Our Crotchet and Spanish clubs filled quickly, but we still have a few spots left for students interested in joining our before school Fitness Club with Mr. Burtis. Please complete the form below to sign up. Notifications will be shared with families to alert you if your child is able to participate in the club they signed up for. If your child is not able to participate this time, please keep an eye out for future club offerings as we intend to provide club opportunities throughout the year.
Upcoming Dates:

10/11 - Labor Day (No School)

10/20 - Early Release Day

10/26 - Picture Re-take Day

10/27 - Early Release Day
Summer Reading Challenge

Please see this write-up and recognition from Ms. Parker regarding the summer of 2021 Memorial School reading challenge!
Invitation for Parents to Join District Committee
The Sanborn Regional School District is looking for several parent representatives to help draft a district policy on racism and bias.

Interested parents would be on a larger committee made up of staff, parents, and other stakeholders and would be asked to meet 4-6 times throughout the year to complete this process (many meetings may occur on Zoom).

If you are interested, please contact Steve Krzyzanowski, Assistant Principal at the high school, at [email protected].
Tick Spraying on School Fields
Please be aware that on Saturday, October 16, there will be tick spraying on Memorial School and Bakie School playgrounds and fields.
Parent Awareness - Students and Tik Tok
There is a national trend on social media platform, Tik Tok, that is encouraging students to film themselves while performing acts of violence, vandalism, sexual harassment, and other inappropriate behavior, and then posting those acts onto their social media platform.

While we have not seen this at the elementary level, it is important that parents hear the same message across all Sanborn schools. Behavior associated with these challenges, also called Devious Licks, will not be tolerated in the Sanborn Regional School District.

Please discuss with your child the danger and serious consequences of participating in these challenges. With your support, we can keep our students safe and learning.

School Counselor Resources for Families
It might be October, but for many of us it takes several months to find that new normal and get back into the swing of the school day routine. This article by Lynn Lyons describes the difference between providing support to our children but not “crutches”.

She says, "When we promote problem solving in our families, then we teach children to think when facing a difficult event rather than simply reacting with panic and avoidance."

Lynn Lyons is a psychotherapist from Concord, NH, who specializes in anxiety. She has written and coauthored books on anxiety for adults and teens. Her website is filled with articles, links to podcasts, and information on upcoming webinars and events.
A Message from Memorial PTO
PTO’s membership drive is going strong! Thank you to everyone who has joined! Remember the first 20 families to sign up at the bronze, silver or gold level will receive a memorial swag package and the class with the highest participation will have an ice cream party! Join HERE

Mark you calendars for October 23rd (rain date 10/24). Bring your gutted pumpkin to Memorial to carve with friends. Finished pumpkins can be taken with you or left to decorate the trunk or treat that starts at 4:30. More details to follow.

Thank you to everyone who participated in last year’s virtual book fair! In addition to buying books for students in need and classrooms, we are finishing off the profits and buying $800 in books for the school library!

When you are at the school, take a minute to admire the hard work of Mrs. Branch and students leading to the gym door. PTO was able to provide funds for some gardening work.

We are looking for volunteers to help chair/co-chair events. Each year parents graduate and take their experience with them. Now is the time to jump in and be ready to keep PTO going! If you are interested, please email: [email protected]

We hope to see you at our next meeting, 10/14 at 7pm in the gym. A zoom link will be forthcoming.
Thank You
As always, thank you for your support, and please don't hesitate to reach out to me with any questions prior to the start of the school year.
