Drought and herd liquidation
Probably the most frequently asked question I am getting relates to how much the drought is adding to herd liquidation in 2021. It’s a difficult question for several reasons. In the first place, we don’t know what the industry would have done in the absence of drought this year. Having decreased the past two years from the 2019 peak, would the industry have continued liquidation in 2021 in any event? The turbulence from the pandemic and other black swan events makes this an even more difficult question.

Labeling of cell-based meat on front burner

According to new research, 59% of Americans have heard about lab meat. As part of the government’s oversight of the new products derived using cultured cells obtained from animals under USDA jurisdiction as they enter the marketplace, USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced an advance notice of proposed rulemaking to solicit comments and information regarding the labeling of meat and poultry products.

FBI warns ag sector of cyber-criminal attacks
The Federal Bureau of Investigations warned the food and agricultural sector in a September 1 notice to be on alert and prepared for potential cyber attacks. In doing so, the FBI outlined some precautions that companies can take.
Ransomware attacks targeting the food and agriculture sector disrupt operations, cause financial loss, and negatively impact the food supply chain. Ransomware may impact businesses across the sector, from small farms to large producers, processors and manufacturers, and markets and restaurants.

Conference Reminder - join us for the 41st Discover Conference: “Health Management of Calves: From Intrauterine Life to Successful Weaning”
Make your plans now to attend the 41ST ADSA DISCOVER CONFERENCESM ON FOOD ANIMAL AGRICULTURE - Health Management of Calves: From Intrauterine Life to Successful Weaning.
