The Ground Zero Flag Team Will Visit Monroe today for the "Honor and Remember New York Run for the Fallen."

Harriman Engine Co. No. 1 invites the Monroe community to the 9/11 Memorial in Monroe (located at the gazebo on Route 17M across from Bridge Street) for a ceremony today, Monday, June 6th, at 5:30 p.m. to reflect on the men and women who served and those brave souls lost during or as a result of 9/11 and the Global War on Terrorism.  The event will honor all first responders as well.  The American Flag that flew at Ground Zero will be raised and attendees will be asked to take 9 minutes and 11 seconds to reflect on these events and to remember all those involved.

The Ground Zero Flag Team is made up of three components: (1) the 3’ x 5’ U.S. Flag that flew at Ground Zero after the attacks of 9/11; (2) a small piece of marble recovered from the rubble of what is believed to be from the lobby of the South Tower at Ground Zero and (3) a Logbook that chronicles the travels of the team and holds the signatures of those present at the ceremony as well as housing pictures, patches, badges, challenge coins, etc. that are presented.

These Remembrance/Tribute Ceremonies have become tradition since 2003 with the purpose of having those present take a few minutes out of their hectic schedules to remember and reaffirm a promise that we as a nation will “Never Forget.” This ceremony is not only to Remember the Fallen (from 9/11; the Global War On Terrorism and First Responders) but also to pay tribute to those that survived 9/11; have been involved in the Global War on Terrorism and all First Responders that protect our communities and also honor all of their families.

There are just a few simple requests for the event:

  • As long as weather permits, the Flag will be flown and or displayed for a minimum of 9 minutes, 11 seconds.

  • All present are encouraged to take group pictures with the Team.

  • All present at the ceremony are encouraged to sign the Logbook and permanently record their interaction with the Team. The Logbooks will be on display at whatever museum the Team is retired to in the future – both in hard copy and digital form along with any patches, challenge coins, pictures, letters or other memorabilia collected on the Team's missions.

  • Please note that any items individuals or families wish to include in the Logbook, including a dedication, can be brought to the ceremony for collection. There will also be time for dedications to be emailed to heco1secretary@gmail.com if additional time is needed.

  • All present will do their best to  “Never Forget” those we honor and “Say Thank You” to those that serve – every chance they get.
