Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance found in your body and many foods. Your body needs cholesterol to function normally and makes all that you need. Too much cholesterol can build up in your arteries. After a while, these deposits narrow your arteries, putting you at risk for heart disease and stroke.
-
You can lower your cholesterol levels through healthy lifestyle changes: Low-fat and high-fiber food (Eat more fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, and whole grains), getting at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate or 1 hour and 15 minutes of vigorous physical activity a week, maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking or quitting if you smoke.

Low LDL (“bad”) cholesterol Less than 110 mg/dL
High HDL (“good”) cholesterol 35 mg/dL or higher

The National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) recommends that adults aged 20 years or older have their cholesterol checked every 5 years.

- A Note From AHN's Dietitians:
Foods that are high in fat, especially saturated fats, can increase your LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels, putting you at increased risk for heart attacks and strokes.
To protect your heart and optimize your health, try some of the following swaps when cooking at home or dining out:

Meet our Team - Donna Padilla, Assistant Director of
Aging and Disability Resource Center
|
|
 |
Donna Padilla was born and raised in Reno, NV and loves her home state.
"While my family faced various struggles, growing up in a low income area, my neighbors taught me to help and care for my community. We didn't just live next to each other, but we were a part of each other’s lives." Donna says.
With an Associates in Paralegal Studies, Donna graduated from TMCC in 2012 looking to further her role in helping her local community. She kicked off her career at AHN as an Access Medical Care Coordinator in 2013. As of today, she has recently celebrated her 7th year working at AHN, with a recent promotion to Assistance Director of the Aging and Disability Resource Center.
"I was first introduced to the ADRC program during a company meeting and this program felt like the right next step." said Donna.
She has proven her passion and determination to help improve our community's health. "I have really enjoyed being a part of helping all Nevadan communities."
