Day of the Dead Campus Celebration

Join us on Tues., Nov. 2 in the atrium of Hagerty Hall for a free Día de los Muertos celebration co-sponsored by the Dept. of Spanish & Portuguese, Office of Diversity & Inclusion, Latina/o Studies, Sigma Delta Pi, Building Anti-racist Ohio, and CLAS.

Activities will include:
10:30am-1pm: Árbol de deseos, interactive ofrenda, pan de muerto, hot chocolate, sugar skull giveaways
1:30-2:30pm: honoring of our ancestors, community sharing

Afro-Descendant Activism in Argentina

The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at NYU in partnership with the BMCC Department of Ethnic and Race Studies, OSU CLAS, the Center for the Study of Africa and the African Diaspora (CSAAD), and The Loisaida Inc. Center present, "Afro-descendant Activism in Argentina, A Conversation with Black Legal Scholars."

This educational exchange will take place Thurs., November 4, 4-5:30pm and will build upon a previous virtual roundtable discussion hosted by CLAS, which can be viewed here.

Teaching resource: El día de los difuntos

Although Mexico's Día de los Muertos is perhaps the best-known celebration on November 2, related traditions exist throughout Latin America.

Check out this multilingual multimedia resource, created by the Abya Yala Student Organization, which highlights the cultural importance of Bolivia's Día de todos santos, Brazil's Dia de finados, Venezuela's Día de los fieles difuntos, and much more!

Study Zapotec at IU in Summer 2022

The Summer 2022 Indiana University Language Workshop is now accepting applications, this year with the new option to study Zapotec!

All participants pay in-state tuition, all courses offer transferable college credit, and scholarships and fellowships are available both for non-IU students and non-students.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity:
A Sociological Introduction

Professor Matthew M. Hollander of Marion Technical College has published an Open Educational Resource textbook on racial and ethnic diversity, with support from a CLAS Community College/Minority Serving Institution Professional Development Grant, made possible through Title VI NRC funds from the US Department of Education.

The textbook, entitled Racial & Ethnic Diversity: A Sociological Introduction, consists of four units: I. Introducing diversity; II. Whiteness and power; III. Legacies of racialized slavery; and IV. Immigration and Latin America.

Global Education Courses for Spring 2022

In Spring 2022, Global Education will offer the following two courses, both of which will meet on-campus and engage virtually with international partners:

Honduras Sustainable Community Development (3cr)
Students will engage in international development as blended teams of Zamorano University and OSU students. Students will work collaboratively and remotely using problem solving mindsets to investigate, propose, develop and support community-driven development initiatives related to water systems management. Apply for this program through the Global Education portal.

Guatemala Service Learning (3cr)
Students will work with in-country partner Mayan Families to develop useful sustainable technologies in fields such as housing, community planning, cultural planning, biogas and solar energy, healthcare, water, sanitation, agriculture, education, and economic development. Students can enroll in this course directly in Buckeye Link, searching for ENGR 5797.22S.
