“Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people"
“Jesus was Missing!”
Last week, I walked into Hobby Lobby to buy a CHRISTmas gift. As I approached the festive front door, I could see large signs in the entrance that said Merry CHRISTmas. Though I couldn’t see behind the masks it appeared like most people were smiling, seemingly in the CHRISTmas spirit. The wonderful sounds of CHRISTmas music tickled my ears. Signs seemed to be everywhere, “CHRISTmas décor 50% off.” Customers were hustling and bustling around and so was I. But something stopped me in my tracks. Literally.
Jesus was missing!

There were animals, and angels, wise men, and a shepherd intricately painted, perfectly poised, all intently focused on one thing. The beautiful figures all looked pleased. Their demeanor invited those gazing on them to share their view. What were they looking at? Carpet.
I’m not kidding. There I stood in the CHRISTmas décor section and there was no Jesus. I guess Jesus was sold out.
The shepherds were overwhelmed when an angel of the Lord appeared to them. Luke tells us the “glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.” That’s what happens when you are in the presence of the Lord, but it is in precisely these moments, when our Lord tells us not to be afraid.
Can you imagine if those shepherds went to Bethlehem and Jesus was missing?
Oftentimes, something is missing during CHRISTmas. We work hard to buy, wrap, decorate, and cook, our hustle and bustle lives numb us to what CHRISTMAS is really about. Someone is missing, the CHRIST child Jesus.
Discouragements in our lives do the same. We hustle and bustle around finding ways to fix it, help it, and numb it. Our joy inventory is low and we feel all alone.
The angels left and the shepherds were left in silence and darkness. But they were not alone, in their hearts was a promise of a Savior. So those shepherds ascended the terraced hills to Bethlehem and…. “hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.”
They found exactly what was promised. Jesus
If you are discouraged today and feel like you have been left alone in the darkness, God’s promise is for you too. Jesus is not sold out -Jesus is not missing!
“Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.
See you Sunday as we Rediscover Joy in our discouragements.
Joyful in Christ,
Austin

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully[a] will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
