4-H Achievement Awards 2020
Congratulations to our Award Recipients for their hard work in the 2019-2020 4-H year! Because of Covid-19 restrictions, we had a drive-in Achievement Awards ceremony at the Poinsettia Pavilion on Sunday, June 15. The event was planned by our Recognition Director Amylynn Robinson along with the our county ambassadors who emceed the event. The ceremony was transmitted over car radios as well as on Zoom for viewers at home. Please see our blog for a list of everyone who received awards and see more photos here.

Earn an Emerald Star!
These 4-H'ers did it...so can you!

Ashley Pyler overcame many obstacles to earn her Emerald Star in 2020. She had planned a Primaries Field Day event for March 21st before fate interfered in the form of the Covid-19 pandemic. California was ordered to stay home on March 19, so Ashley had to cancel her event. With the encouragement of her mentor Kitty Beckmann, she was able to have her event virtually over 2 days on June 6 and 7. Primary members were invited to join Zoom sessions with crafts, STEM activities, entomology, public speaking, magic tricks and more. Her event was successful, and we congratulate her for her positivity, organization and desire to create an event especially for the Primary 4-H'ers!
Last year, Claire Boone and Nadja Klem of Santa Rosa Valley 4-H received Emerald Stars at Achievement Night 2019. They created a wonderful day of learning for the public with their Alpaca and Horticulture Farm Day on June 22, 2019.
If you would like to earn your Emerald Star, please click the button below to find more information on the Resource Hub of our website.

"The $500 Challenge"
Whenever we use our 4-H debit cards, 1% goes to the California 4-H Foundation, and when it reaches $500, they cut us a check! We would love to get our first $500 check by Jan 30, 2021. Right now, Ventura County's five spenders have generated approximately $80 (Susana Bruzzone-Miller, Barbara Coulter, Patrick Zavala, Jennifer Boone and me, Valerie Zeko). Just imagine what a little more 4-H power can produce!
How can we get a $500 check in January?
If 25 people got the card this month and each spent $500 - $1,000 in December and January on the card and used the round-up feature, we could knock this challenge out of the park! Who's with me?!
What will we do with the money?
Our 4-H Management Board has a budget of $22,000 which funds things like:
- Fair Awards - $2,500
- Recognition - $2,500
- Youth Leadership - $1,600
- Animal Science - $1,000
- Communications / Outreach - $900
- Presentation Day - $550
Please help support these important 4-H programs by doing your normal spending with the 4-H debit card.

Ventura County 4-H Mourns
the Passing of Kim Leach
The following was sent by Kim's sister. If you or your club would like to send a condolence card, please send to Lisa McGowan, 847 Elko Ave., Ventura, CA 93004. We are thinking about organizing a fundraiser to purchase a plaque to hang in the fair office; details coming soon.
The heart of the Ventura County Fair has missed a beat.
On October 29, 2020, Kimberly Leach, Exhibits Supervisor, passed away after a brief, but courageous battle with an aggressive form of cancer. Kim was a private person and felt strongly that no one be burdened by her health issues, but she loved you all very much and considered you family, Fair Family.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the family has elected not to have a public memorial at this time. We hope the future will bring us an opportunity to share affection and emotions without the need for social distancing and masks.
In lieu of flowers or other expressions of condolence, please consider donations in Kim’s memory to your favorite charity or the Ventura County Fair Foundation.
