Sydney’s Favorites Devotional: Week 3
When I look at Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have set in place, what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You care for him? Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. ~ Psalm 8:3-5

These verses are so rich with images I love: The moon, the stars, the heavenlies. My family can vouch for this… if the moon is out and we are out… I’m going to point it out. “Look,” I say and point to the heavens where the moon shines from its place. Ever present, ever consistent, and ever amazing.
Then there are the stars. They sprinkle the night sky with diamond reminders of how small we are. Our sun is the closest star to planet earth at 93,000,000 miles away. Somehow God put it at just the right distance so we don’t burn up or freeze. The next nearest star to our Solar System is Proxima Centauri in the Alpha Centauri Solar System at about 4.24 light-years away. The vastness of the universe is mind-boggling. When you go outside on a cloudless night look up. What do you see? Too many stars to count and yet God knows each by name.

Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of His great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing. ~ Isaiah 40:26 NIV

Taking in the night sky is enough to make anyone feel insignificant, and yet… God is mindful of us. He knows the name of each star spread across the cosmos, and He knows my name. He knows your name. He cares for you and me so intimately that even in this vast universe where we live, He focuses on and notices each of us.

What is man that God is mindful of us? Yet Psalm 8:5 says, He has crowned us with glory and honor. He has made each of us in His image (Genesis 1:26) and included us in His great redemption story filled with mysteries which angels long to look (1 Peter 1:12). What an honor that God thinks of us, that alone is enough to make me feel like a queen ~ crowned with honor and glory.

Take a moment to consider our vast universe and the awesomeness of our Creator and thank Him that He is mindful of you.
