Non-residential sector recovery continues

Nationally, the value of building permits in the non-residential sector rose 4.2 per cent to $3.4 billion in October.

According to the latest figures published this week by Statistics Canada, construction intentions in the non-residential sector were up 4.2 per cent in October.

Intentions for institutional buildings jumped 63.2 per cent, with a $254 million Mills Memorial hospital project in Terrace, B.C. helping drive momentum to increase substantially in that province, compared with the previous month.

New CaGBC report identifies the next steps for retrofits

The Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) has released a new report intended to take deep carbon retrofits of Canada’s large buildings further beyond the discussion stage, delivering the research and strategies needed to achieve broad market readiness.

The CaGBC hosted a webinar and panel discussion recently to release the report, with Mona Fortier, president of the Treasury Board of Canada, on hand to declare, “This is the moment for bolder climate action.”

New OGCA report targets project managers, supervisor shortage

The Ontario General Contractors Association (OGCA) has released a new report outlining potential solutions to address labour shortages among project managers and site supervisors in the ICI construction industry.

General contractors have repeatedly identified a sector-wide workforce shortage of skilled candidates for these leadership roles, stated a Dec. 6 release. The report is titled Building Pathways and Pipelines into ICI Construction.

Eglinton Crosstown West Extension takes next steps

The largest subway expansion plan in Canadian history, the future Eglinton Crosstown West Extension, reached another milestone moment this week as the Ontario government released a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for the second advance tunnel contract for a section of underground works from Jane Street to the future Mount Dennis Station. The province also announced plans to release a pre-qualification for the transit project’s elevated section of tracks from Scarlett Road to Jane Street in the coming weeks.

DIALOG pursues global patents for structural system to bring mass timber technology to high rise buildings

In a significant step to advance a design concept awarded as the winner of Fast Company’s “2021 World Changing Ideas” in architecture earlier this year, DIALOG has officially filed for the patent of its Hybrid Timber Floor System (HTFS) today. Once approved, the system could lead to the introduction of mass timber structural solutions into the supertall tower category, thus significantly reducing the environmental impact of tall building development in high density urban areas. The patents have been filed by the international design firm in Canada, the United States, the European Union, Australia and China.

CCOHS course focuses on substance use and stigma in the workplace

HAMILTON, ONT. — The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) has released a free online course, Substance Use in the Workplace: Addressing Stigma.

The goal is to to help workplaces understand and respond to the impact of stigma towards people who use substances. The course describes what stigma and discrimination are, how stigma can affect the care a person receives, how to respond to concerns without using stigmatizing language or behaviours, and appropriate steps to take when talking to others, indicates a release.
